Did Epstein influence Bitcoin core development? Short answer: No. This is not how Bitcoin works. Here’s what happened: Epstein donated to MIT Media Lab…who in turn supported MIT Digital Currency Initiative…which in turn funded Bitcoin developers. These devs used to be funded by The Bitcoin Foundation (which I used to run as volunteer Executive Director) there are many devs and no dev or team had power or control over Bitcoin. Under MIT’s patronage the devs had the same deal they had with us at The Bitcoin Foundation: that they could work on the code and not have direction from the org. More importantly — how Bitcoin works is that *even if* a dev was compromised then the nodes and miners would still have to run that code to make it included in Bitcoin. So for example if I had somehow asked the devs paid by Bitcoin Foundation to “add 1000 coins for Bruce” 1) they wouldn’t have done this / it would have been counter to our agreement 2) no miners would run that code & no nodes would recognize it. It would be a laughing stock and completely rejected. Does this mean code dev is not an attack vector? No. It’s still a risk. Particularly with nation state style actors and very careful efforts to co-opt which are much more sophisticated than “give Bruce coins” or something. This is one reason I’m cautious of Bitcoin core funding - especially from actors who’ve had bad judgment in the past. I think we should be cautious of who does the dev and view it as an attack vector. Bitcoin code is transparent and has lots of eyes on it. So in this case especially there isn’t even a solid accusation, let alone evidence that MIT directed nefarious code changes. If that was an allegation the first question should be: well what code specifically did MIT direct and what proof is there and how was it harmful? I think claims around this would collapse. There’s obviously plenty to criticize about Epstein and MIT working with him — and when it comes to digital assets MIT’s work with Gensler and especially its work on CBDCs is much more suspect than the chance that malicious code was pushed through on Bitcoin. In an era when you can do everything, the question is which of these things matter. On the engineer side, it is evaluating the code. Which of this code is even valuable? You can have AI engineers writing beautiful code that could be wrong, that could have bugs in it, that could be vulnerable. Someone needs to review it. Make sure to have a human review at some point, especially critical code that is in the core of your system. On the product side is judgment around what needs to be built and evaluating. And similarly in design, you have to have judgment around, does it make sense in the broader design system. The problem with most Bitcoin Layer 2s being worked on today - including Lightning, Ark, pretty much every BitVM-bridged L2, etc - is that they don't meaningfully contribute to Bitcoin's security budget. There exists a fundamental tension between the need for Bitcoin scaling solutions - which ostensibly take txs (and fees) out of blocks - and the need to bolster Bitcoin's security budget with fees as the block subsidy declines. This is something Drivechains almost certainly gets right - L2s that merge mine are incentive-aligned with miners in a way that other L2s fundamentally are not. Paul Sztorc believes this incentive-misalignment will ultimately doom most of the L2s getting attention right now as a result... curious what folks think about this.

I love it when I come across new technology that gives (European) bureaucrats the middle finger, especially in a situation where they want to spy on and regulate you across the board. Most recently, I was this excited about a non-KYC project for exchanging stablecoins for fiat via which bypasses the dystopian centralized exchanges that have to do massive reporting due to EU regulations like DAC-8 and MiCA. In the case of BITBLIK, just like with you’re doing decentralized P2P trading, so I assume no regulation applies to you (it doesn’t go through any intermediary). Today I came across a great Polish app called BITBLIK which connects the widely available BLIK system in Poland with Bitcoin Lightning. With Bitcoin Lightning, you can pay anonymously anywhere in Poland, withdraw cash anonymously from an ATM (which I just did!), or make online payments on Polish websites. BLIK is widely accepted (it’s supported by a network of over 13,000 ATMs across Poland and hundreds of thousands of merchants; according to AI, there are 87,000 of them). Install the app, launch it—no registration required, no KYC—enter an offer for how much you want to pay in PLN or how much you want to withdraw from an ATM. You’ll make a Bitcoin Lightning payment, which will be locked. Wait a minute or two until someone accepts your offer (the other party who has BLIK and wants Bitcoin Lightning). As soon as they do, a BLIK code will appear. It’s valid for about two minutes, so enter it at an ATM or at a terminal in a store or restaurant. After a successful payment, you confirm that you used the BLIK code, and the Lightning payment is credited to the recipient. Limits for BLIK payments vary by Polish ATM. ING Bank Śląski has the highest limit: 10,000 PLN per day (2,356 EUR), while mBank has a limit of 5,000 PLN per day (1,178 EUR). PKO BP allows BLIK transactions up to 1,500 PLN, but you can make up to 20,000 PLN (4,722 EUR) worth of transactions per day. And of course, those limits apply to the merchant. Anonymous cash for Bitcoin Lightning at nearly all Polish ATMs. And that’s not all—you can pay with Bitcoin Lightning literally everywhere in Poland! No KYC, no registration, via the Nostr provider. I love it when I come across new technology that gives (European) bureaucrats the middle finger, especially in a situation where they want to spy on and regulate you across the board. Most recently, I was this excited about a non-KYC project for exchanging stablecoins for fiat via which bypasses the dystopian centralized exchanges that have to do massive reporting due to EU regulations like DAC-8 and MiCA. In the case of BITBLIK, just like with you’re doing decentralized P2P trading, so I assume no regulation applies to you (it doesn’t go through any intermediary). Today I came across a great Polish app called BITBLIK which connects the widely available BLIK system in Poland with Bitcoin Lightning. With Bitcoin Lightning, you can pay anonymously anywhere in Poland, withdraw cash anonymously from an ATM (which I just did!), or make online payments on Polish websites. BLIK is widely accepted (it’s supported by a network of over 13,000 ATMs across Poland and hundreds of thousands of merchants; according to AI, there are 87,000 of them). Install the app, launch it—no registration required, no KYC—enter an offer for how much you want to pay in PLN or how much you want to withdraw from an ATM. You’ll make a Bitcoin Lightning payment, which will be locked. Wait a minute or two until someone accepts your offer (the other party who has BLIK and wants Bitcoin Lightning). As soon as they do, a BLIK code will appear. It’s valid for about two minutes, so enter it at an ATM or at a terminal in a store or restaurant. After a successful payment, you confirm that you used the BLIK code, and the Lightning payment is credited to the recipient. Limits for BLIK payments vary by Polish ATM. ING Bank Śląski has the highest limit: 10,000 PLN per day (2,356 EUR), while mBank has a limit of 5,000 PLN per day (1,178 EUR). PKO BP allows BLIK transactions up to 1,500 PLN, but you can make up to 20,000 PLN (4,722 EUR) worth of transactions per day. And of course, those limits apply to the merchant. When various merchants accept your Lightning payments, you effectively have no limits—you’re only limited by the counterparty’s liquidity. BLIK is 100% open-source, so it can’t be banned! You can fork it and use it within your own closed community.
