That’s why it’s critical we align AI with values that propagate consciousness. In the long run, it’s difficult to imagine that humans will be in charge if we’re only one percent of combined intelligence. XAI’s mission is to understand the universe because curiosity, existence, and understanding are all connected. Today’s guest Dr Michio Kaku has spent more than 70 years studying the universe, and he believes we may be closer than ever to discovering a “theory of everything”. You are atoms forged inside a collapsing star billions of years ago that somehow learned to read this sentence. Musk: “We have 9,000 satellites up there, and not once have we had to maneuver around an alien spaceship.” No signals. No visitors. No wreckage. 93 billion light-years of observable space and nothing but silence. That silence might be the most important data point in human history. There is a topic coming up again and again in health right now, and peptides are at the centre of it which has made me want to understand what is actually going on… When I told my team I wanted to do an episode on peptides, they sent me a long list of doctors I could speak to but there was one person they kept coming back to. That person was Dr Alex Tatum. And after this conversation, I understood why. Alex has spent over a decade studying this space, and one of the reasons I wanted him on is because he has a rare ability to explain complex things in a way that actually makes sense. I didn’t have a clear idea of what peptides even were before we spoke but now I do. That means everything that we know in the universe follows the laws of physics, and there’s no reason to believe otherwise. Well, the laws of physics are completely computable. They can fit inside a Turing machine or computer, and a computer can simulate the laws of physics with arbitrary accuracy, limited only by the specific power of that computer. If you increase the power of that computer, you can simulate them more accurately. So humans already simulate—in our minds we simulate—and through our computers we simulate the weather, we simulate quasars, we even simulate human systems. We simulate the economy. We simulate all kinds of things. So anything that can be understood, we can understand in our minds. This is something the AGI people get wrong when they talk about superintelligence. There is nothing out there that can understand something fundamentally that we can’t understand. It might be faster at it, it might have more compute, it might have more memory, but there’s no concept that it can understand that we can’t ourselves understand. I think SpaceX is a collection of some of the very best humans on Earth, both in capability and morality and goodness, and I think we want to have an AI that is born of that capability and that morality and that goodness. I think that’s very, very important. So I’d like to encourage people to help out, actually, with the AI hardware on the ground and the AI software and, of course, with the AI satellites. Solar is going to be a very important part of that. The TerraFab will be a very important part of that, but we must also succeed on the software front, and we’re going to be training Grok on the sum total of all SpaceX information. So in a way, it will be trained on you. You will effectively be the parents of the AI. It will inherit your thoughts and ideas and beliefs, and I think that’s a good thing. So, yeah, we’ve got to win here on the AI hardware and the AI software. That maybe is the most important message.
