🤨 Matthew Wright’s smug LBC lecture on “just £9.95 a week” for illegal migrants is textbook gaslighting. He smugly asks: “How much money do they get?” Caller Mike replies: “I think it’s about £9.50.” Matthew in his smug, clever, dismissive manner: “It’s £9.95 a week. Could you live for a week on £9.95 a week do you think?” Mike cuts straight through the con: “If somebody was giving me 3 square meals a day, and free Wi-Fi, and free laundry, and free clothes, and a free bicycle, I think I probably would.” No, Matthew. The easiest solution is not letting them into the country in the first place. Next easiest is immediate removal if they arrive illegally. After that: detention with basics only — no cash, no hotels, no freebies, no incentives to stay and claim. Pretending the debate is about whether £9.95 is “enough” while ignoring the full package of taxpayer-funded accommodation, food, laundry, clothing and the rest is dishonest. Framing the problem as “we just need to let them work” dodges the fundamental issue: uncontrolled illegal entry and the costly asylum system that rewards it.
