UPDATE: WASHOE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE LOCATES WALKAWAY INMATE FOLLOWING COORDINATED SEARCH EFFORT The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) has successfully located and taken 23-year-old Chase Orput back into custody following a coordinated search after he walked away from a Washoe County Sheriff's Office inmate work crew on Monday, July 27, at approximately 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday, July 28, at approximately 1:00 p.m., deputies located Orput near Interstate 80 and the railroad tracks in the area of mile marker 21 after a citizen from a nearby business recognized him and promptly contacted the Sparks Police Department (SPD). The information provided helped direct SPD officers and WCSO deputies to his location. The SPD further assisted by deploying a drone to provide aerial support during the search, allowing WCSO deputies and Sparks Police officers on the ground to quickly locate and safely take Orput into custody. Orput was evaluated and provided medical care at the scene before being transported back to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he will face additional escape charges. Orput was serving a 90-day sentence for misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to show or maintain proof of insurance. The WCSO extends its sincere appreciation to our regional law enforcement partners for their partnership and assistance throughout the search effort. The coordinated response between agencies, combined with the vigilance of a community member who reported the sighting, was instrumental in bringing the incident to a safe and successful conclusion. UPDATE ON APPA: K9 Appa is on the road to recovery after being shot during that armed standoff on August 4. The dog took rounds from the suspect who had pointed a gun at a deputy and fled after contacting kids in the area. Deputies finished the threat. Appa went into surgery fighting for his life. Now the update. He had two surgeries. His prognosis is good. He’s been released from the vet and is home recovering with his handler and family. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office says they’re encouraged by his progress and remain hopeful. There’s even video of him walking around and crushing his breakfast. They say he’s got a long road still, but they’re optimistic he’ll get back out there catching bad guys and finding dope. That’s the toughness these K9s bring. The Boulder Police Department is trying to find two possible victims after a hit and run near the Bolder Boulder race yesterday. Just after 8:15 a.m. on Monday, May 27, bike officers contacted and stopped a driver in the Whole Foods parking lot on Pearl Street after receiving reports of a driver acting strangely at a nearby race barricade, wearing a ski mask and then running two stop signs. Despite stopping briefly and talking with officers, the driver then ignored officers’ commands and drove off. The suspect was driving a brown Ford Explorer when he struck another car in the parking lot and nearly hit a woman walking nearby before driving off. He continued driving away from officers and headed toward blocked off roads where race participants were running. Numerous officers coordinated to keep the driver from entering the racecourse and conducted a pinch maneuver to stop the car. The suspect was then taken into custody. Officers would like to speak to the owner of the vehicle that was struck and to the woman who was almost hit, who might have been an early race runner or a spectator, seen in this video clip. “We are all very thankful that these two community members appear to be okay despite what happened and that we stopped this man before he could get any closer to the race,” interim Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said. “Crimes like this are exactly what we train for and we have been preparing for this event for months, both internally with our drone, Patrol, SWAT, K9 and Traffic teams and with our partners at CU, the Bolder Boulder, several Boulder County public safety agencies as well as community members.
