Cowboy Bebop's mechanical art designer was Kimitoshi Yamame. He's worked on tons of series and movies from Gundam to Bubblegum Crisis to Casshan.

Sci-fi really does benefit from being made by nerdy engineer types that are fascinated with the details of how things work. Otherwise it turns into soulless nanite magic.

You can tell it's from an age before capacitive sensors become mainstream. Now we know every user interface is just going to get more and more shit.

One of the best parts is how as high tech as it is, its all simultaneously meant to look dated and weathered, a little finicky.

Alright fine, I'm putting Bebop on as weekend marathon. Been a while since I did a viewing.

If only Sunrise (late 90’s build) & Shinichirō could take the reins of Firefly.

The term you're looking for is "Cassette Futurism" by the way.

Unironically, low tech solutions like this would be hardier and more robust in outer space where the nearest repair shop is light years away. Think about which of the two is gonna survive a cracked screen better? 80s tech or a smartphone?

These were 80/90s modern with futuristic yet dated design. The aesthetic captures our imagination with its simplicity/similarity. Miss it

We need designers to embrace this look instead of the Late soviet era they've been pushing.

You gotta post a warning before dropping a video like this...

Kind of reminds you of an era when we tried different concepts and ideas for everyday usage...now everything is the same.

Great anime, the sci fi stuff is subtle and so good when on screen.

I love everything about this show except the complete lack of an engaging plot. So close to perfection, and yet so far away.
