@AdamSchefter It really doesn’t matter, does it? This is a list of failed coaches and famous cowboys. Moore might be in both categories..

@AdamSchefter What a horrible list. Most valuable sports franchise in the world about to hire a poverty-level coach. No other serious professional franchise would have a high school coach on its list. What a damn joke.

3 Reasons there aren’t more Black Head Coaches in the NFL. -Circumstance -Comfortability -Access It’s not a coincidence. The NFL Head Coaching fraternity is hard to break into with the amount of great coaching candidates, nepotism and back scratching that occurs that makes it tough for former players to break into the profession and climb to positions that are coveted for Head Coaching jobs. Often times owners and front office executives want to hire the people who are the best for the job, but are also the ones they are most comfortable with because they look like them, have the same or similar life experiences so they connect better with them and who they want to go golfing with. BUT ACCESS is the issue that has clear examples of how black players don't get the same treatment in coaching circles. That’s not an opinion. It’s a fact. Take a look at Quarterbacks after they finish their playing career. Some go from playing to QB coach to Offensive Coordinator to head coach conversations quickly. The fast track is real for some players. Kellen Moore went from playing to QB Coach to Offensive Coordinator in 2 years after retiring and became the New Orleans Saints Head coach 8 years after retiring. Kevin O’Connell went from playing to coaching in 2015, was an OC in 4 years by 2019 and the Minnesota Vikings Head Coach in 7 years by 2022. FAST TRACK Philadelphia Eagles OC Sean Mannion and Washington Commanders OC David Blough both went from playing to NFL Coaching staffs and OC in 3 years. FAST TRACK. We’ve seen Black quarterbacks go into coaching in this same pipeline like Byron Leftwich who became an NFL coach in 2016 as a coaching intern and was the OC of the Buccaneers by 2019. But despite winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady, he never got a chance to be an NFL Head Coach. Why? Did he bomb the interview? Or was he just not in the right circumstance, where he made the right people comfortable or had the proper connections to determine his access. Right now if you are on Sean Mcvay's staff you are a walking head coach in waiting. All 4 of his last OCs are head coaches. -Liam Coen -Mike Lafluer -Matt Lafluer -Kevin O'Connell Because they were the best men for the job, great coaches, had the right circumstance, made the right people comfortable, and had the right conections to get access to the job. Seneca Wallace, Jason Campbell, Cleo Lemon, Randall Cunningham. Why didn't they get the same opportunity after their playing days? It’s not just a coincidence. Maybe they didn’t want to be a coach because of the long 20 year cycle they would be presented with to get to the top of the profession that is standard for most. But if you told any of them they would be an OC in 3 years or less and a Head Coach in 8 years or less. ALL OF THEM WOULD TAKE IT. But they never had access to that Fast Track pipeline. The NFL cant say we want the best leaders’ while recycling the same leader profile. And if the NFL is truly a meritocracy, then the pipeline should reflect merit, not comfort. Not ‘who looks like the last guy we trusted.’ Not who gets the benefit of the doubt for being associated with family lineages. In a league that is 70% black, the leadership should be more representative of the leagues players. There are qualified Head Coaching candidates of all skin colors. They just want a chance to succeed or fail just like their competition when their resumes clearly say they have earned it.

WOAH 🚨 Massachusetts Democrats are working on a bill to have a commission where Muslims weigh in on every piece of legislation and put Muslims in every level of Government Yes, this is 100% real “Update on the Allahu Akbar Commission that legislators in Massachusetts want to force on the people. Here are the names of the 14 America-hating politicians who sponsored the bill to create this Muslim commission that will infiltrate every area of law and government. James B. Eldridge, Vanna Howard, Manny Cruz. They want Muslims to weigh in on every piece of legislation. Robyn K. Kennedy, Jason M. Lewis, Adam Gómez. They want Muslims appointed to every level of government. Joanne M. Comerford, John J. Cronin, Liz Miranda. They want Muslims to grade every single state agency to make sure that they meet the Allahu Akbar standards. Pavel M. Payano, William J. Driscoll Jr., Jacob R. Oliveira, Michael O. Moore, Patricia D. Jehlen. They want to pick 11 Muslims for this commission” “Word on the street is that so many people picked up the phone and called their elected officials that they’re backing off the plan, but do not be fooled. They will try again, except next time they’ll be sneakier about it. They’ll keep trying to get their Allahu Akbar votes one way or another.” “Vote these America-hating psychopaths out of office” I want to make it clear this bill is NOT DEAD, and they are still perusing it I hate to confirm this but this is real Democrats out forth a bill, the official title: An Act promoting the civil rights and inclusion of American Muslims in the commonwealth. It is Senate Bill S.2134 / companion House Bill H.3351 It received a favorable committee report, was recommended “ought to pass,” and was referred to the Senate Ways and Means Committee Supporters include CAIR-MA Here is what the bill would do - Serve as a resource and liaison between government and Muslim communities - Promote research and act as a clearinghouse on issues affecting American Muslims - Inform leaders in business, education, government, media, etc., about those issues - Foster unity among Muslim organizations - Identify and recommend qualified American Muslims for appointive positions at all levels of government, including boards and commissions. (READ THAT LAST ONE AGAIN) - Advise executive and legislative bodies on the potential effect of proposed legislation on American Muslims - Assess programs and practices in all state agencies as they affect American Muslims. - Undertake activities so the state “realize[s] the full benefit of the skills, talents and cultural heritage of American Muslims.” - Separately study and report on Islamophobia trends, evaluate existing anti-Islamophobia efforts, review hate-crime statutes for possible changes, and recommend strategies/legislation to combat Islamophobia This is the Islamic takeover of America

Here it is: The Truth Bomb🔥🔥A Decade In The Making, “It should shake every single American in their shoes. I hate to say this, but Barack Hussein Obama, there is now incontrovertible evidence that he was the spearhead of a seditious conspiracy to subvert the will of the American people and overthrow the United States government back in 2016. We must, absolutely must, hold every one of these criminals accountable for the crimes that they committed. They are the most heinous crimes committed in American history. James Comey, John Brennan, Clapper, Rice, Biden was in the meeting on July 28th in the Oval Office. They briefed Barack Obama on Hillary Clinton's plan to tie Trump to Russia collusion lies. It consumed our national discourse for 5 years. It undermined a sitting, duly elected president. It sabotaged administration. It framed a three-star general. It destroyed and ripped this country apart. We had a constitutional crisis, the likes of which I don't think any American can fully comprehend. It is atrocious, and every single one of them must be held accountable” BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, JOHN BRENNAN, JAMES CLAPPER, JAMES COMEY, Hillary Clinton, Adam Schiff, Susan Lice, Andrew McCabe, Peter did Lisa, Lisa did Peter, Rod Rosenstein, Sally Yates, Bruce Whore, Nellie Whore, Loretta Lynch, Valerie Jarrett, Ben Rhodes, John Carlin, Mary McCord, James Baker, Jonathan Moffa, Michael Kortan, David Laufman, Nellie Ohr, Samantha Power, John Kerry, Lisa Monaco, Denis McDonough, Jim Rybicki, Bill Priestap, Christopher Steele, Richard Dearlove, Alexander Downer, Stefan Halper, Josef Mifsud, Sergei Millian, Sidney Blumenthal, Cody Shearer, Terry McAuliffe, Jonathan Winer, John Podesta, Huma Abedin, Anthony Weiner, Cheryl Mills, Heather Samuelson, Jake Sullivan, Robbie Mook, Robert Mueller,, Andrew Weissmann, Peter Kadzik, Rachel Brand, Matthew Axelrod, Mary Jacoby, Preet Bharara, Josh Campbell, Jennifer Palmieri, Sir Andrew Wood, Robert Hannigan, Alexandra Chalupa, Michael Sussman, Dimitry Alperovich, Crowdstrike, Fusion-GPS including Glenn Simpson, and Perkins Coie, including Marc Elias, for falsifying intelligence solely aimed at overthrowing the United States government. In less than 3 years, LIV Golf’s production team have made a big impact on golf broadcasts, constantly pushing boundaries and bringing in new innovations. These include the first ever “drone tracer”, “Any Shot Any Time”, the ability to watch a live feed of any group on an app and the “LIV Line”, among others. SVP of Worldwide Productions, James Watson spoke with Talk Birdie To Me about the journey: “I used to spend early mornings watching golf with my dad and we’d be trying to watch Greg Norman and he might have been in 7th, but you’re not seeing a lot of him. Or in more modern times Jason Day, Adam Scott, Cam Smith playing on the PGA Tour. If they’re outside of the top 5, and their names aren’t Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, you did not get to see them. “So that thinking helped shape how we wanted to produce golf in a way that the fans could consume. It was about graphics, it was about the amount of shots we could put on air compared to other broadcasts and then it evolved into second screen experience. How could you leverage your on site resources to deliver a product where if fans are not getting what they want on the screen, they can then go to their iPad and very easily follow along like they do on the Masters app.” In order to provide this level of coverage, LIV Golf have more than 60 cameras, including 2 drones and 11 handhelds, with tracers. They also have more than 200 crew, from all over the world, to make sure every shot is covered with all the graphics you’ve seen on the broadcast. I never really understood what went into delivering a product like this, but I got to visit the production truck at Valderrama in 2023 and it was very impressive to see it first hand. But despite their innovations, James says they’re always trying to improve: “Any product needs to constantly advance with the times. For me, LIV’s still in the audience capture mode. So we constantly need to refine ourselves, target what works, what doesn’t work, are we seeing more viewership? “The thing I always come back to is, this is the best participation era in the last 30 years in Australia and in the US. You’re seeing more people playing golf, but you’re not seeing that translation into live viewership and you need to ask yourself why? “I think the golf product as a whole needed disruption and we’re proud we’ve done that at LIV. To come in and disrupt in the same way World Series cricket did with Kerry Packer and David Hill in the late 70s.” Personally, I think James and the team are doing a great job, which I think has been validated by how much the PGA Tour broadcasts have improved over the last 2 years to keep up. A rising tide lifts all boats. Link to the TalkBirdieToMe episode with James Watson in the comments ⬇️

Justin Fields: Victim of bad spacing “50 yards passing!! Fields is terrible..” “11 passing attempts, what a joke!” “This is year 5, and he still can’t read defenses” “This has to be a bit!” I’m here to tell you with unequivocal evidence, that these are all lies. What if I were to tell you, that despite all of blame, hate, and finger pointing that Justin Fields is actually innocent of all the accusations? If you want the truth, then research what I am saying Tanner Engstrand is the number one issue with the Jets passing offense and you would be a fool to believe a new QB would alleviate the issue. Pull up the All-22!!! THE SPACING IS OUTTA HAND! No Qb can read a defense like this. Players are lost in their routes and where to lineup. Let’s look at Ben Johnson vs Tanner Engstrand. They came from same offense, same team, and worked together for some time. Why are things completely different? Play-calling experience: Engstrand = 0 years Johnson = 3 years NFL experience: Engstrand = 5 years Johnson = 13 years When I look at Ben Johnson’s offense, everything meshes together so well. QB’s drop correlates to his progressions, Qb has multiple open targets per pass play majority of the time, and QB is given proper spacing of WRs to truly read the defensive coverages. When I look at Tanner Engstrand’s film it is literally worst than high school. Multiple WRs running into each other constantly!! Penalty after penalty because players don’t know where to go. I see a coach only passing when it is obvious passing down. I see a coach completely confused, but not blame has been placed on him. So why aren’t people going at the coach? Why is Fields taking all the blame and Engstrand gets none! Aaron Glenn hired a rookie OC that has never called a game in his life. How do you expect a rookie OC to install an offense in the offseason if he has never even called plays before?! Glenn wanted to run the show with no push back from his coaches. So he hired rookie coaches that would do as he says. Run the ball, pass only when needed. Atrocious mindset… Moral of the story: Engstrand only calls a few passing plays to cover his own ass. This offense was not installed properly. To save face, he is allowing Fields to take all the hits as he sits back and hopes the Jets give him another year with another QB. If Fields had Ben Johnson as a coach, he would be a top 10 QB. He is a better runner and down the field thrower than Caleb Williams. Look at the spacing! Look at the route concepts! Look at the talent he has! Look at the protection!!! My God I’m happy for Caleb Williams, but he ain’t playing lights out the way he should be. If Caleb is winning games because of his legs, just imagine what Fields would’ve been doing in that offense… Let the wheat be separated from the tares father God…

And this is, The Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, John Ratcliffe: Barack Hussein Obama said ‘I want this done,’ ” I want to overthrow the United States government. CIA Director John Ratcliffe “All the world can now see the truth: Brennan, Clapper and Comey manipulated intelligence and silenced career professionals — all to get Trump.” CIA Director John Ratcliffe “This was Obama, Comey, Clapper and Brennan deciding ‘We’re going to screw Trump. We’re going to create this and put the imprimatur of an IC assessment in a way that nobody can question it.’ They stamped it as Russian collusion and then classified it so nobody could see it.” New York post Miranda Devine CIA Director John Ratcliffe “The comparison would be the Hunter Biden laptop. It’s the same people. In the Hunter Biden case, it’s ‘We’ve got to lie to win the election.’ “In this case, it is ‘We failed to influence the election and after we failed, we’re going to handicap the president [Trump] so we can win the next election by polluting the well,” New York Post Miranda Devine CIA Director John Ratcliffe “They were trying to ruin the presidency after the fact. The blatant politicization of intelligence is “unprecedented in American history.” “Obama commissioned this. There was no basis by which it had to be done [before the end of] the Obama administration. And Christopher Wray. 📝 In other words: all three are fully applicable here. Treason: The crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to overthrow the government or wage war against it. Sedition: Language or conduct intended to incite rebellion, insurrection, or resistance against a lawful government. It involves stirring up opposition or hostility toward the government with the aim of disrupting or overthrowing it. Conspiracy: A secret agreement between two or more people to commit an illegal act or to achieve a lawful objective through unlawful means. In law, the agreement itself can be a crime, even if the intended act is never carried out.

Here it is: A treasonous conspiracy orchestrated by Barack Obama to topple the United States government. “By December 14th, there was a leak stating that intelligence community officials believed, “with a high level of confidence,” that Russian president Vladimir Putin was personally involved in the U.S. election hack. Then, on January 6, 2017, two weeks before the first Trump inauguration, a new intelligence community assessment was released that, according to the Office of the DNI, “directly contradicted the intelligence community assessment made throughout the previous six months.” Barack Hussein Obama, CIA Director John Brennan, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Hillary Clinton, Susan Rice, Loretta Lynch, Sally Yates, Lisa Monaco, Adam Schiff, Peter did Lisa, Lisa did Peter, Bruce Whore, Nellie Whore, Robert Mueller, Rod Rosenstein, Andrew Weissmann, Valerie Jarrett, Ben Rhodes, John Carlin, Mary McCord, James Baker, Jonathan Moffa, Michael Kortan, David Laufman, Samantha Power, John Kerry, Denis McDonough, Jim Rybicki, Bill Priestap, Christopher Steele, Richard Dearlove, Alexander Downer, Stefan Halper, Joseph Mifsud, Sergei Millian, Sidney Blumenthal, Cody Shearer, Terry McAuliffe, Jonathan Winer, John Podesta, Huma Abedin, Anthony Weiner, Cheryl Mills, Heather Samuelson, Jake Sullivan, Robbie Mook, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Peter Kadzik, Rachel Brand, Matthew Axelrod, Mary Jacoby, Preet Bharara, Josh Campbell, Jennifer Palmieri, Sir Andrew Wood, Robert Hannigan, Alexandra Chalupa, Michael Sussmann, Dmitri Alperovitch, and officials from the DNC, CrowdStrike, and Fusion GPS — including Glenn Simpson — as well as Perkins Coie, including Marc Elias, falsified intelligence as part of a seditious conspiracy with the sole intent of toppling the United States government during the 2016 presidential election.” 7. 24. 2020: President Donald Trump: “So Obama and his team of lowlifes spied on my campaign, and got caught - Open and shut case! Bill Maher’s audience audibly gasps when he reads what the Democratic Socialists of America are actually saying out loud: MAHER: “Trump has told 1 trillion lies, but when he says the DSA are actually COMMUNISTS, that’s not one of them.” “And it’s not hard to prove it just by quoting the DSA and their candidates.” “J.D. Vance was on the show, and I told him that if the Democratic Party keeps going in the direction of the DSA, my vote was in play. And all I heard all vacation was, ‘Oh, my God, you’re a Republican now.’ No, that's not what I said. I said in play, and here’s why.” “Because not a week goes by where I don’t read about some newly chosen, exciting new face in the Democratic Party. And then when that face opens its mouth, the Communist Manifesto or some other crazy shit comes out! Again.” “Let’s just read the quotes. The DSA platform says: ‘You work as much as you are able and no more than needed.’ If that was any closer to Karl Marx’s dictum, from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs, they’d be sued for plagiarism.” “New York Mayor Mamdani once tweeted, Karl Marx’s words exactly. They’re not trying to hide it. Their most popular influencer, Hasan Piker, thinks communism is so groovy, he laments the fall of two of the most murderous regimes in history, the Soviet Union and Chairman Mao's China.” “Mamdani's aide, his top aide, Cea Weaver, said, ‘If you don't believe in the government's sacred right to seize property, it's over.’ And ‘impoverish the white middle class.’ What? That's a goal? You know you're supposed to scare people into voting for you, right?” “One of the new, soon-to-be Democratic congresspeople, Darlesia Chavalier, supports seizing all properties from landlords and said, ‘Seize the means of production.’ Mamdani has said ‘The end goal is seizing the means of production.’ I think they want to seize the means of production.” “Now, maybe you missed that in school or missed school altogether, but THAT'S COMMUNISM.” “Now the coalition within the DSA called the Marxist Unity Group is in ascendance. And I must take them at their word. When their words include, ‘Our commitment is to the long-term struggle for a fully liberated classless society. In a word, communism.’” “What do they have to do, tweet out ‘Elect more communists’? Oh, yeah, Cea Weaver did that.” [Shows tweet, audience audibly gasps] “Yes, [she really did that]! ... People gotta realize this is going on.”

Originally from September 2024 This covers all the different statements from UFO movers and shakers about an upcoming alien invasion or some kind of impending apocalypse. Joined by Fringe I am not saying the world is ending or an invasion is coming but a suprising amount of notable figures in the UFO Disclosure movement have made statements indicating they believe this to be the case. TOM RENZ SHOW: "HOW TO REFUSE A VACCINE or any other "BIOLOGIC IN THE HOSPITAL?" "On today’s show I brought on my friend Laura Bartlett, who has been on the front lines helping families navigate hospital abuse and the COVID murder protocols. During COVID, we watched hospitals override patient wishes, push deadly protocols, and ignore informed consent. Laura has been helping people fight back in real time. "Her focus is practical. If you walk into a hospital without preparation, you are stepping into a system designed to move fast, document little, and protect itself. We discuss how most people think they are getting informed consent, but in reality they are signing broad intake forms that can be twisted into blanket permission." "Laura laid out a proactive strategy. A structured “I do not consent” document process designed to create formal notice, documented delivery, and a clear paper trail. Not emotional arguments. Not yelling at nurses. Notice. Documentation. Evidence. The kind of structure that actually matters if you end up in court." "As an attorney, I can tell you this much. Notice is everything. Evidence is everything. If you want your no to mean no, you better be able to prove you said it clearly and that they received it. That is how you turn a debate into a liability problem for a hospital." "We also drew an important parallel. What happened in hospitals during COVID is not that different, legally speaking, from what we are seeing in certain child protective cases. When the state starts deciding it knows better than you about your body or your child, you have a systemic problem. And that problem does not fix itself." "On top of that, we talked about the insanity of pushing mRNA into flu shots. There is no long-term safety data. There is no legitimate emergency. And yet the machine keeps rolling. You cannot call yourself pro-health while green-lighting experimental technology without gold standard science. It does not work that way. This morning, Jeh Johnson, the former Secretary of Homeland Security under Obama, went on MSNBC to make the case for Joe Biden to stay in the race. "A presidency is more than just one man… I would take Joe Biden at his worst day at age 86 so long as he has people around him like Avril Haines, Samantha Power, Gina Raimondo supporting him, over Trump any day." I’m sorry, but democracy doesn’t work that way. Americans elected Joe Biden, not Avril Haines, Samantha Power, and Gina Raimondo. Sure: all presidents rely on unelected advisors. But at the end of the day, we expect that the person the majority voted for will make the decisions. That’s clearly not the case with Biden. As we saw in the debate, he’s unable to speak clearly. And that means he’s unable to think clearly. And Biden’s own aides admitted that Biden only has six good hours a day. What happens if Russia threatens nuclear war at two in the morning? It’s fair to wonder if Biden’s incompetence is, to some extent, responsible for various disasters in his administration. If Biden’s mental capacity were 100% would he have allowed so many migrants to cross the border? So many that the border crisis threatens his presidency? Would he have approved such a chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan? Where were Avril Haines, Sam Power, and Gina Raimondo when all of that was going down? Maybe they wanted those bad policies. Or maybe Biden didn’t understand what they were telling him. Or maybe there wasn’t time in his six-hour workday to think things through. Or maybe everyone was too scared to tell Biden the bad news. Politico this morning reported that senior Biden administration officials go to “great lengths” to “avoid provoking a negative reaction” from Biden because he has such a short temper. “It’s like, ‘You can’t include that, that will set him off,’” said one of them. “It’s a Rorschach test, not a briefing. Because he is not a pleasant person to be around when he’s being briefed. It’s very difficult, and people are scared shitless of him.” In other words, what we saw at the debate wasn’t the worst of it. The worst of it is that Biden can’t or won’t deal with bad news. And what is being president of the United States if not dealing, day after day, hour after hour, with bad news? There are definitely a lot of people urging Biden to step down. But what’s so disturbing is how they’re making the case based on his inability to defeat Trump, rather than on his ability to govern the country. It’s time to get real. We’re talking about the guy who decides whether to fire off nuclear missiles. The guy who decided to sell Ukraine missiles that can hit Russia. The American people elected Biden to have that responsibility, not Avril Haines, Sam Power, and Gina Raimondo. According to the latest polling, just one out of four Americans think Biden has the mental capacity to handle that responsibility. We are in a deeply surreal and dangerous moment. Consider that the media reported that two days ago, Hunter Biden played a key role in convincing his father to stay in the race. Remember Hunter Biden? The guy who oversaw a vast influence peddling scheme for his dad while smoking crack and playing with guns? He’s who President Joe Biden is listening to? Democrats are telling us we shouldn’t worry about that. The representatives of the deep state will take care of us. Who is Avril Haines? She’s the head of the Directorate for National Intelligence — our top spy chief. Who is Jeh Johnson? He’s the guy who created the basis for the Department of Homeland Security to demand censorship by social media platforms. The Democratic Party is not democratic. It has been trying for years to incarcerate the main political opponent of the president of the United States. It oversaw the creation of a Censorship Industrial Complex. It weaponized the FBI and other intelligence agencies to spread disinformation about its enemies. And the Democratic Party is now trying to get away with running for reelection a man who lacks the compos mentis required to do his job and is openly saying that the deep state will run things instead. Jeh Johnson is right that a presidency is more than just one man. But it’s a role that depends entirely upon that one man. And in a democracy, we elect that man. The alternative is tyranny.

Stargate Trivia: Casting Stargate: Atlantis While SG-1 was my first love (We were together for seven years!), my time on Atlantis proved equally memorable. The show was possessed of a similar tone in its mix of high adventure and humor, yet proved distinct in its exploration of Ancient mythology and an unfamiliar galaxy as seen through the eyes of a new set of heroes. Atlantis offered a sense of wonder and camaraderie born of isolation and constant danger. Whereas team SG-1 could always go home at the conclusion of their adventures, the members of the Atlantis expedition (at least for those first few seasons) could only draw comfort from the city of Atlantis itself – and, of course, each other. It was unique and compelling yet, at the same time, comfortingly familiar. Nowhere is this more evident than in its opening theme, composed by the late Joel Goldsmith, which is, at turns fresh, haunting, stirring and, throughout, discernibly Stargate. Stargate: Atlantis wasn’t envisioned as a companion to Stargate: SG-1. It was intended to replace the long-running series. The only problem was, with eight seasons under its belt, SG-1 wasn’t quite done yet. And fans (and the network) weren’t done with it either. And so, instead of passing the torch and segueing to a new Stargate series, we ended up producing both. In retrospect, it was quite an achievement: 40 hours of television! Today's productions can barely manage a third that output, but Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis delivered two fantastic 40 episode seasons before SG-1 took it’s final bow. It wasn’t easy, but it was certainly made easier by all of the enormously talented individuals who made it happen, from the office staff and crew to the cast and my fellow writer/producers. Still, it was not without its challenges. Take casting, for instance. It may surprise you to know that, when it comes to producing a show, not everybody cares about costumes or set design or whether the script’s fifth act denouement is emotionally satisfying - but everybody, and I do mean EVERYBODY, has an opinion on casting. Studio and network execs, producers, hell, even your significant other peering over your shoulder as you screen the auditions on your home computer, will want to weigh in. Of course, the more voices in the mix the more likely there are to be disagreements. So it is with every production and Atlantis was no different. Different individuals envisioned these characters in very different ways and, as a result, consensus was only achieved after many auditions, calls-backs, heated discussions, and not-so-gentle reminders that our start date was fast-approaching and we really needed someone to say the lines on camera. The part of Carson Beckett was one of the first we cast. The other producers were in Rob’s office, screening the first batch of local auditions when Brad called me in and told me to check out the guy onscreen. I hadn’t imagined Beckett with a Scottish accent but, after watching Paul McGillion in the role, I couldn’t imagine him without one. He’d brought something unexpected to the part, something we all responded to. Elizabeth Weir was not an easy character to pull off. She had to be smart, confident and strong yet needed to exude a certain warmth and empathy we were looking for in the civilian leader of the expedition. When it came time to (re)casting the role, several established names were considered (One had her own hit genre show back in the day while another went on to break out on a hit show soon after), but it was Torri Higginson who managed to strike just the right balance and vault her name to the top of the list. The role of Teyla Emmagan was a tough one to cast. Like Weir, she needed to be a strong, empathetic leader. But she also required something even more important – quite literally, an other-worldly quality that made her unique. Some equally talented actresses auditioned for the role but, as good as they were, they were never quite able to achieve that gravitas Rachel pulled off with such grace and seeming ease. Former VJ Rainbow Sun Francks won the role of Lieutenant Ford on the strength of a great audition, preceded by an equally great audition with a funny hat. I recall Brad Wright on the phone with our casting agent, advising him to ensure there would be no hat worn in the callback for fear the network would fixate on it. There wasn't, they didn't, and Rainbow delivered. The role of John Sheppard was the second to last one cast. It came right down to the wire and there were several candidates in play. The character was originally envisioned as a good ole southern boy, so it only made sense that Ben Browder’s name was bandied about early. However, he was too busy shooting Peacekeeper Wars to warrant consideration. A number of other actors were considered (one went on to play the lead in a hugely popular show the following year while another made his mark as a handsome heart throb on another hugely popular medical series) but it was Joe Flanigan who won the part based on his ability to pull off the devil-may-care attitude Brad and Robert were looking for. We come to the final role cast, a character who, in many ways, embodied everything Atlantis was about: exploration, discovery, fun, humor, and seat-of-your-pants-Holy-Sh&%-how-the-hell-am-I-going-to-get-out-of-this-adventure. And, as I mentioned in a previous post, he almost didn’t make the trip to Pegasus. Originally, the casting call went out for a completely different character, an earnest young doctor who would lend the team much-needed medical support on their off-world ventures. Unfortunately, no one could agree on who that actor should be. If the casting of Sheppard went down to the wire, then the casting of this final role went a step past it. Finally, days away from production, Robert Cooper had an idea: Forget the doctor character. Why not use an established character from SG-1? How about Rodney McKay? The writers were on board, but some executives weren't weren’t sold on the idea. They found him annoying! Hell yeah, but he’d be sooo much fun to write for! Rob got on the phone and went to bat for Rodney, pointing out that the character had come a long way since first being introduced way back in SG-1’s 48 Hours. He’d evolved, going from annoying jerk to endearingly irritating. To this day, I’m convinced that they weren’t totally convinced but, with production poised to commence, they relented, I suppose figuring they could just replace the character somewhere down the line. No one, even those who loved the idea of having the endearingly irritating Rodney McKay on board could have predicted how hugely popular the character would become.
