.Andrew Ross Sorkin seems unsure how the US government could buy Bitcoin in a budget neutral way. There are a number of ways that more Bitcoin could be acquired: - Asset Forfeiture: The U.S. government already seizes Bitcoin through criminal and civil asset forfeiture. Expanding and streamlining these processes could increase the amount of Bitcoin acquired. This is budget-neutral as the assets are obtained through legal proceedings, not direct purchases. - Revaluation of Existing Assets: There have been discussions about revaluing existing government assets, such as gold reserves, to current market prices. The increased valuation could create a "surplus" that could then be used to acquire Bitcoin. - Strategic Sale of Non-Essential Assets: The government could identify and sell non-essential assets, such as certain stockpiled commodities (our "strategic cheese reserve" 😅) or underutilized properties (Yellowstone national park - I kid, I kid!), and use the proceeds to purchase Bitcoin. Pierre Rochard has quipped that if you own a chair, you don't own enough Bitcoin (you should be standing more and sitting less). Obviously this is being a little flippant, but the idea has truth to it: if something is non-productive or has little growth potential, why not sell it and acquire the best performing asset of the last decade? So, does it matter that Bitcoin seems to be moving away from its cypherpunk roots? Bitcoin ETFs and Bitcoin Treasuries have taken BTC mainstream. So I asked Saifedean Ammous this very question. His answer might surprise you... 👀👇 "If you have very strong feelings about how people should and shouldn't use Bitcoin, you're in for a rough time." "To be honest, a lot of people project too much onto Bitcoin. Ultimately, it's just a bunch of software and anybody can use it in any way they want. Initially, it's a small subset of people that use it and then they start projecting their values onto it. And then over time, they expect it to continue to abide by that," Ammous said. "If it's a successful technology, it's going to be used by everybody. It's going to be used by small businesses, large businesses, governments, individuals. It's money. Everybody uses money. There are 8.5 billion people on Earth, they all use money and they're all going to continue to use money. And Bitcoin is just the best money." Ultimately, the protocol itself is immune to the financial instruments that TradFi has concocted. If people want to lend against their BTC or create complex financial products, that does not actually impact the underlying network. "The way that the protocol works is that it's completely blind to what you're doing with your coins on the Bitcoin blockchain there is no paper Bitcoin there's no such thing as paper Bitcoin there's only 21 million Bitcoin and every node makes sure of that every 10 minutes and then if somebody who has some of these Bitcoin on their private key decides to sell obligations or financial liabilities referring to that Bitcoin under any condition, that's their choice. It's outside of Bitcoin and it's outside of the realm of other Bitcoin users being able to say this is right or wrong and this should happen or shouldn't happen. People are going to do whatever they want with the Bitcoin, including selling access to it or exposure to it in all kinds of different ways. Anyone who values Bitcoin needs to understand what is happening here. The US government will pick it up first as a PoW (physical power) technology to protect US assets and interests in cyberspace—exactly how the US employs it will likely remain classified at the TS/SCI level. Other countries follow suit once they realize they've lost any cyberspace advantage or edge they thought they had. A Strategic Bitcoin Reserve will not just be a "nice to have" idea thought up by a bunch of financial engineering nerds, it will become an absolute necessity by any national government if they expect to be taken as a serious global power. In the end, Bitcoin, and all the individuals and entities who stand to benefit from it, will win.

I was watching a Parker Lewis talk from seven months ago, and it was genuinely excellent. I was surprised to discover that I agree with him philosophically almost 100%, especially after he has voiced some disagreements with me on here. His vision of a Bitcoin standard was clear. Bitcoin becomes the money, pricing mechanism, payment rail, and unit of account. Companies earn Bitcoin cash flows, assets are valued in Bitcoin, and people use their savings to invest and assume risk. His exact words were: “People will have savings. People will still invest. People will still take risks… We’re not all just sitting here staring at our digital wealth.” Correct. That is precisely how I think about Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the apex money and ultimate denominator. I hold it in self-custody. I also invest some of my capital in equities when I believe the expected Bitcoin-denominated return compensates me for the additional risk.

Gold since April 2025: +60% Bitcoin since April 2025: -30% Gold since its January high: still near all-time highs. Bitcoin since its October high: -48%. 5 consecutive red months for Bitcoin. A 0.55 correlation with the S&P 500 as of March 1st. And people still call it "digital gold." Let me explain why that framing will cost you money: When the Middle East escalated, gold surged above $5,300. Bitcoin dropped. When equities sold off, gold held. Bitcoin sold with them. I said this on back in April last year when Bitcoin was reclaiming $90,000 and everyone wanted me to be bullish on crypto: "If NASDAQ takes a header, if risk assets take another leg down, you want to bet Bitcoin goes up or down? I'd vote down." NASDAQ took a header. Risk assets took a leg down. Bitcoin went down. Gold went up. It's not complicated. Gold is insurance against irresponsible policies from central bankers and government officials. It protects you against the falling dollar. It's been doing this for 5,000 years. “I'm not a huge hater of the institutions. I wasn't a huge hater of altcoins. These institutional products are just kind of altcoins. People can go make their money. Go do your thing. But it's not Bitcoin. An ETF is not Bitcoin. With these centralized projects, you're not getting the core values of Bitcoin, the control, the censorship resistance, the privacy. You're putting it in a centralized wrapper, and if you put Bitcoin in a centralized wrapper, you lose everything that's good about it. It's not Bitcoin. It's just an affinity marketing thing. It's “Hey, you like Bitcoin, go buy my other project." Just like, "Hey you like bitcoin? Go buy my altcoin." It's not the same thing, and I think in many ways it's a step backwards. I don't hate these people, but they certainly shouldn't be celebrated. It's not forwarding our industry if we do treasury strategies, if we do ETFs, we cheer for BlackRock and Cantor. That's a step backwards. It's not something to be cheerful for. It's not a victory, in my opinion. A victory is having more people have direct ownership of real Bitcoin. We now have millions of people who've been onboarded into this fake paper thing that's a claim on a claim on a claim of something that has Bitcoin in the words, but it's not actually Bitcoin. They are never actually holding a wallet like many of us did back in 2012 where somebody sent us that first dollar and you say, "Wow, this is cool. I didn't need to give my ID and I'm able to control and hold this sound money for the first time." You now have a whole generation of millions of people that don't have that. They have some junk fiat product sitting like sludge on their centralized brokerage account at the centralized clearing firm, traded on a centralized exchange, with a centralized transfer agent, and a centralized custodian, and they have to trust six levels of people on a claim for something that has the word ‘Bitcoin’ in it. It's not a victory. It's not a step forward. I don't think it's something that should be celebrated at all.”
