🚨 SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT WITH THIS MARKET Record highs make the market look strong. But an index can keep climbing while the foundations beneath it get weaker. U.S. stock market value: $81.6 TRILLION. Annual U.S. GDP: $32.6 TRILLION. That puts the market at roughly 2.5 times the size of the economy. An expensive market can stay expensive. The bigger question is how much depends on the same few companies. The S&P 500 is weighted by market cap. The largest companies receive the largest allocations when money enters funds tracking the index. Buy the index, and a substantial share of your money goes straight into the giants already leading it. Now look beyond those giants: → $1.18 trillion in credit card debt. → A personal savings rate of just 3.4%. → More than $510 billion in unrealized losses at U.S. banks. → Pressure on borrowers struggling with card and car payments. None of these numbers gives you a crash date. Together, they challenge the idea that record stock prices mean everything is healthy. And concentration makes that disconnect matter. The ten largest companies are worth nearly $30 TRILLION. A collective 10% decline would erase roughly $3 TRILLION in market value. For scale, that is around 9% of annual US GDP - although lost market value is not the same as lost economic output. The other 490 companies would not need to fall for those ten to drag the index lower. THAT IS THE VULNERABILITY HIDING INSIDE THE RECORD HIGHS. You can own hundreds of companies and still depend heavily on a handful of earnings reports, valuations and expectations. Watch how many stocks are participating in the rally. Watch whether earnings justify the prices. Watch what happens when the leaders stop leading. The next warning may arrive while the index still looks strong. When I change my market exposure, I'll explain it here publicly. If you want to stay one step ahead of the market, make sure you're following.
