In 1976 the Viking landers beamed back Mars images to the NASA control room. Monitors showing blue skies and the control room stunned - "that kind of looks like Earth." Brian describes how a technician was ordered to adjust analog monitor colors to make Mars appear more red. Ron Levin (son of Viking program scientist Dr. Gallivan) changed it back and subsequently got in trouble and he was forced to revert to the red tinted images. NASA's been artificially tinting Mars red ever since and only recently stopped. The modern rover photos show blue skies and terrain that looks more Earth-like.
