As a government we will continue to collaborate with all our international partners and make sure we maximize all the services they can render to our people. We have to make changes in our lifestyle first to achieve weight loss… After all this, if we are still not achieving the required weight, we should consult a doctor… Earlier, there were some medicines for weight loss which were withdrawn due to their side effects… A medicine is only approved when the benefits outweigh the risks, and it can reduce up to 5% of your weight. The GLP-1 was initially used for diabetic management but was later found to have an impact on weight… But one should not consume it recklessly as these are serious medicines for a serious problem… People should be careful as there can be side-effects…”

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, I know many Jamaicans are feeling overwhelmed, emotionally, mentally, and physically. The loss, the uncertainty, and the effort to begin again can take a heavy toll. I want to remind everyone, it’s okay to not feel okay. Reach out for support, talk to someone you trust, and take care of your mental well-being as we work together to rebuild. The Ministry of Health and Wellness, under Minister Tufton’s leadership, continues to strengthen this area by training more mental health professionals and expanding access to services. It will take time to reach the numbers we need, but the commitment is firm. At the same time, we must not overlook one of Jamaica’s greatest strengths, community. In times past, before we had the language to describe “mental health,” it was the power of community that kept us grounded. Today, that same unity and care for one another are just as important. Let us continue to check in on our neighbours, support those who are struggling, and rebuild, not only our homes but also our sense of hope and togetherness.

These forces prefer to have us in terror and anxiety, which disable our capacity for critical thinking and make us more compliant and more credulous. They want us hiding from ourselves, to avoid our own shadows, and dulling our pain and loneliness through sedation and distraction. Yet inside of us, we know that love and self-knowledge are the only true paths to good health. Here at HHS, we need to take on the task of guiding our country and the world to question, towards skepticism, towards engagement, to discover our own paths to living our fullest lives, unleashing the potential in every one of us to make good personal choices that allow us to nourish, to heal, and to develop ourselves. Only this path will make us effective citizens in a democracy. This is decidedly the American identity that we want for our children and their children. The news cycle changes on a whim and the issues Michiganders are facing continue to grow, so today I sat down for our first episode of: Kitchen Table Issues. Today we’re talking Michigan’s state budget crisis that could force me to lay off over 400 people in my department, with many more workers at risk. My team and I are working on a plan to protect as many jobs as we can, and do our part to offer solutions that can help avoid a shutdown. What that means right now, as we come to the end of the year, is that literally hundreds of thousands of people are going to go on the exchanges in their state to choose what health care they want for next year—and all of them are going to see a giant increase in their costs. I talked to one family that’s paying about $300 a month right now for their health insurance. It’s going to jump to, I believe, over $1,800 per month. Can you imagine what’s going to happen when people go online and see they’ll have to pay exorbitant amounts for their health care? They won’t be able to afford it. Many of them will turn away and not pay for it—obviously, they’ll lose their health insurance. And as we know from the old Obamacare discussions, the fewer people who have insurance under our current system, the more everybody pays.
