If only the draft Mike Ditka for Senate effort in 2004 had succeeded! A SurveyUSA poll had Obama leading Ditka by only 7 points. In October 2013, Ditka said not running for the Illinois U.S. Senate seat against Barack Obama in 2004 was the “biggest mistake I’ve ever made. Not that I would have won, but I probably would have. And he wouldn’t be in the White House.” Republicans unsuccessfully drafted Ditka to run after the nominee, primary winner Jack Ryan, withdrew. Ditka ultimately declined citing his sports broadcasting commitments and schedule. Obama went on to defeat Alan Keyes, who was successfully drafted to run for Senate in 2004. Obama was successfully drafted to run for @POTUS in 2008 despite his repeated and public disavowals between 2004 and 2006.

Da best! RIP, Coach Iron Mike Ditka! You and Dick Butkus were both the epitome of tough footballers.
