Now, here’s where it gets juicy The contracting ventricles of the heart have another crucial role Look at the orientation of the heart muscles and how they contract, they do so in a spiraling motion This was first discovered in 1864 It causes the blood to be vortexed when the ventricles contract The blood is also vortexed when it comes into the right atrium and any time it goes through a valve Leonardo Da Vinci was the first to note the spiraling of blood as it moved through the heart as his illustration below (2nd picture) shows Just goes to show how ahead of his time Da Vinci was.. unbelievable

Indeed, Leonardo da Vinci meticulously described how the heart's ventricles generate intricate, swirling patterns of blood flow, resembling vortices. He believed that these patterns facilitated the efficient movement of blood through the heart and into the arteries. This concept was groundbreaking for its time, as it demonstrated an early understanding of fluid dynamics and the complex, dynamic nature of cardiac function. It contrasted with the simpler, more mechanical views of the heart held by many of his contemporaries.

A pair of fully inflated horse lungs 😟 Did you know that a horse's lungs can hold up to 70 liters of air?! That's equivalent to the volume of a large trash can! When fully inflated, a horse's lungs can expand to twice their normal size, allowing them to take in huge amounts of oxygen to fuel their powerful movements. It's no wonder horses can run for miles and still have the breath to neigh!

That spiral orientation is what makes the heart such an efficient pump. When the heart contracts it doesn’t just squeeze the blood in the ventricle, it wrings itself on a longitude axis similar to wringing out a washcloth. That’s why a relatively small infarction can have a dramatic negative impact on ejection fraction and cardiac output.
