When my son met his future father-in-law (not foreseen at the time) for the first time, the guy asked my son who his parents were and if he could call them? My son gave him MY number. The guy called me and asked if I could meet him for lunch “soon?” I said, “No, I don’t make a habit of meeting my son’s date’s parents for no apparent reason. Who has that kinda time?” I followed that by asking him why? He said he wanted to know more about my son and where/who he comes from? I just told him, “Then ask him? It’s up to my son to decide if or how much he wants to share with you, or wants you to know.” It’s not my job to advocate for my kid in his personal relationships and that he has no problem doing so for himself IF he thinks it’s important enough. That was the last time I heard from the guy for over a year until my son put together a dinner with us all to announce his engagement. I did learn from my son some weeks after that phone call that the dad suddenly started talking to him directly a couple days after he gave him my number. He didn’t ask me what I said, but I did tell him to NEVER give our number to future date’s parents. If the parent(s) won’t talk to you directly then they’re not worth your time or our privacy. You may never get their respect, but you damn sure won’t get it passing them off to others to advocate for you. Make them confront you and be prepared to stand up for yourself. Besides, if your girlfriend is worth anything SHE’LL advocate for you. It apparently worked out because they appeared to get along swimmingly when I met them at the engagement dinner. I have always despised dependency and passivity. I was happy and a little proud of myself for keeping that dad’s concern for his “little girl” where it belonged, between my son and her dad.

My son has an 18 year old daughter and he was really calm when he met her boyfriend. He just decided that every gun in his gun collection and every knife in his knife collection needed cleaned just before the boyfriend was suppose to show up. Did not turn out the way anyone expected. Boyfriend saw the guns and they got into a discussion about which was best and pros and cons of each one and all three of them ended up spending the evening at the range.

I wish I had a dad and experienced this level of love 😒

I don't need to do any of this because I taught my daughter how to handle herself! No man will ever do anything she doesn't want done to her!!

I know some of these are skits, but i have two sons, and if a man tried to bully my sons like this, i would beat his fucking ass in front of his daughter. Thats why when my sons try to date, im meeting the parents of the daughter to make sure everyone is ok with it.

Found out my niece was couch surfing with a newborn. Took her in and laid down some strict rules. One was if a man friend was coming for her none of that beep the horn crap. You're coming in the house and meeting me. I would either be in uniform and if not have my sidearm and badge on my belt. I don't recall any second dates.
