Monday morning (6am) reality on the Pokuase–Accra stretch. I managed to get a car easily today (skipped breakfast and rushed out after oversleeping thanks to last night’s blackout 😭), but Mile 7 and Barrier tell a different story, crowds stranded, traffic building, and frustration setting in. This daily commute is a silent struggle many endure just to show up. The youth are not lazy. They are trying. The system just needs to meet them halfway.

Smooth Commute Ahead on Hebbal–Nagawara Stretch 🚶‍♂️...🛵... 🚗✨ A major clean-up and encroachment removal drive along the Hebbal–Nagawara–Allalasandra Bridge (Outer Ring Road) corridor is set to improve traffic flow, pedestrian movement and overall road safety. Over the past week, a large-scale sanitation and debris-clearing operation was carried out across this busy stretch, involving multiple civic and infrastructure agencies, along with local businesses, traders and community groups. 🔹 What was done? • Removal of construction debris and roadside waste • Clearing of encroached footpaths to restore pedestrian access • Beautification of pedestrian pathways • Elimination of long-standing garbage black spots 🔹 Key impact: • Around 1,200 tonnes of waste and debris cleared • Over 150 sanitation workers deployed daily • Use of JCBs, tractors, tippers and compactors • ~40 illegal shop extensions removed, freeing footpaths for public use 🔹 Local-level results: In Dasarahalli ward alone, 150 tonnes of waste were cleared and 80 metres of footpath was upgraded with the support of civic staff and volunteers. 🌱 Why this matters: Cleaner roads, safer footpaths and smoother traffic not only improve daily commutes but also encourage better civic habits, environmental responsibility and respect for public spaces. 📍 Location: Hebbal – Nagawara – Allalasandra Bridge (ORR) Bengaluru North City Corporation

I walked the picket line again this weekend with hotel housekeepers striking against inhumane treatment, including anti-strike violence by Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Los Angeles. Fairmont housekeepers clean 14 to 15 large rooms a day. The hotel, which cut staff during COVID, is now enjoying pre-COVID occupancy rates and profits but nevertheless wants to increase daily workloads to 18 rooms to compensate for understaffing. 3 out of every 5 workers is injured on the job each year due to repetitive lifting of heavy mattresses + bending to scrub and clean. Workers typically commute 2 hours from Palmdale or Victorville because of the unaffordable housing in Santa Monica. Some live in their cars during the work week to save gas money. Many of the workers also work two jobs to keep up with inflation. As he laid off hundreds of hotel workers during the pandemic, Hilton’s CEO doubled his own salary from $10 million to $20 million annually.
