Labhraítear, Ní mhairfidh sí” — “Unless spoken she won’t survive”. With Dáithí’s model every student would be getting a baseline level of spoken Irish, without having to carry the burdens of PRÓS and Poetry that puts so many students off even counting Irish in the LC. I would

put a lot of emphasis on the craic element of learning the language as Dáithí said. If you make the optional Irish enjoyable from 1st to 3rd YR, students will be more likely to keep on both Irish subjects for the LC, I think. Please feel free to give your thoughts down below.

@the2johnnies There should be 2 elements to Gaeilge at 2nd level. Gaeilge Beo compulsory to leaving and Gaeilge Acadúil optional for Senior Cycle. The Gaeilge Beo course should have minimal reliance on sit down, written exam. Blatantly obvious that the current layout is counter productive

@the2johnnies To move to a model like this, do we have teachers at a sufficient level to carry classes completely in Irish. My own experience is that the Irish teachers in some schools are not even at a decent level

@the2johnnies I’ve been saying THIS for years! I’m 42 & I HATED Irish in secondary as it was just all this prose and poetry. It was more rote learning lines & phrases about prose & poetry and not enough about the language. Irish should be made fun and conversational.
