My parents said this and refused to ever wear seatbelts (born 1920s). They hated the movie Kramer vs Kramer, insisted it glamorized divorce. They said a lot of things that turned out to be true. Listen to the elders.

In England you can still dring up to 0.8 and drive. If you have more usually they will escort you home safely.. Doesn't seem to be many accidents from it..

Maybe but drinking and driving should be banned because you're putting other people's lives at risk. Wearing a seatbelt should be up to you though.
