Prime Minister Chris Luxon responds to criticism his National party has betrayed farmers and that New Zealand should withdraw from the Paris agreement. The PM claims such action would cause larger companies and whole countries to ban our produce from sale and it would “hurt New Zealand bad”. Farmers counter this view by saying it hurts them to stay in too. More and more countries are exiting the Paris agreement with Australia and Canada probably the next to leave. Therefore, when Parliament voted, it was endorsing those irregularities, which is not permitted by the Constitution. The second allegation made is that the insertion of the words “accept” or “approve” was done after the sitting of the Finance Committee. These terms were not, in fact, deliberated on or concluded by the Finance Committee, despite Sinawo Tambo’s proposal that the committee start by taking a position to either accept or amend the proposal, which would, in turn, inform the report and not the other way around.

Pauline hits the nail on the head regarding the Liberals. It almost doesn’t matter what the Liberal Party leader says when he’s got to carry such a divided party. The “moderates” will never allow him to take the sort of decisive steps he would need to take to win back voters’ trust. Take net zero, for example. He makes many of the right noises but then fails to back leaving the Paris Agreement because he’s held hostage by the “moderate” faction. Without being prepared to leave the Paris Agreement, warm words on net zero mean nothing at all. Pauline is right to call it out.
