Happy birthday to the legendary Roy Ayers, born on this day in 1940!!! Often described as "The Godfather of Neo Soul", he is best known for his compositions "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", "Lifeline", and "No Stranger To Love". At one time, he was said to have more sampled hits by rappers than any other artist… In this video, Roy Ayers is performing “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” on Soultrain (1976)

Roy Ayers was a musical genius that was sampled by many. Here’s North Carolina A&T’s Blue and Gold Marching Machine playing a rendition of Mary J. Blige’s “My Life,” which was sampled from Ayers’ “Everybody Loves the Sunshine”: (via BGMM)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Roy Ayers. A true innovator, Roy shaped and revitalized the musical landscape across generations. His sound became the backdrop to every era he graced, with Everybody Loves the Sunshine serving as an anthem for so many of us.

Roy Ayers dropped "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" 50 years ago today, a song sampled by Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Common and Pete Rock, and interpolated by dozens more. It's also probably the closest that anyone has ever got to making a song that sounds exactly like warm sunshine.
