#WATCH | Kolkata, West Bengal | Jadavpur University allegedly denies permission to celebrate Ram Navami on the university campus, citing the Vice Chancellor's absence as the reason. A student at Jadavpur University (JU), Somsurya Banerjee, says, "On 28th March, we submitted a letter to the university on behalf of General students of JU seeking permission (for Ram Navami Celebrations); today, we received a signed copy from the university stating that they cannot grant the permission as the VC is absent. They are using this as an excuse. Similarly, on April 3 and 4 - SFI held a political programme, and that too in the absence of the VC, but they had permission. Every religious activity like 'iftaar' was organised here on the university campus, but none of us objected to it. We have given intimation to the university and also written an e-mail to the police that we will celebrate Ram Navami peacefully... We expect that all the student unions and the administration will respect and cooperate in our celebrations..."

Dr Tinashe Hofisi, a Zimbabwean human rights lawyer and legal scholar currently serving as a Research Fellow at the Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia, recently joined an interesting debate on Constitutional Amendment Bill N0.3 with Professor Jonathan Moyo. The debate was organised by the Southern African Times and run in full by The NewsHawks. Hofisi's work primarily focuses on constitutional law, judicial design, and enforcement of human rights in Africa. He is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Virginia School of Law and the Karsh Institute of Democracy. Previously, he was a Hauser Global Fellow at New York University. Before his academic career in the United States, Hofisi spent seven years as a human rights lawyer with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, specialising in constitutional litigation.
