Alberta is the last stand for Canada. I’m not Albertan so personally, I would rather they stay in Canada because I understand the detrimental effects that this will have on the country. That being said, it might need to be done. Not just for Alberta - but for Canada. We might have to disassemble this whole thing so we can build something new. Nothing is working here. Our constitution, our judicial system, our parliamentary system….it’s time for a change. Maybe Alberta leaving is exactly what Canada needs to wake up.

Alberta separatism poses a real threat to our nation. Danielle Smith is entirely responsible for allowing the separatist rhetoric to continue. It’s also a distraction from the real issues facing Alberta right now, like the health care crisis in our hospitals and emergency rooms. We’ve already seen in Quebec and the UK the immense economic damage separatism referenda leave in their wake. Don’t forget, this Premier and her UCP government changed the rules on citizen initiatives to allow this petition to move forward. They lowered the threshold for signatures, they took away powers from Elections Alberta and the Chief Electoral Officer and gave them to the Minister of Justice. They conveniently raised the application fee only after this separatist petition was approved by the Minister himself. This isn’t leadership for Alberta or for Canada. We can do better for all of us.

How does the East still have the strongest voice in Canada? It's time to get to the negotiations stage and demand better for the future of Alberta. Send a message to Ottawa and vote YES to leave Canada in a referendum in order to put Alberta into a seat of power to negotiate for better for future generations. Otherwise, it's telling the Feds that annual increases in taxation without representation is ok. A "Yes" vote to leave Canada doesn't mean it's immediate, it takes the first step to powerful discussion and negotiation. The legal pathway, as laid out, requires discussions in Good Faith with the Federal government and the other 9 Provinces.
