Only 54% of New York City public school students can read at their grade level, and teachers' unions aren't making this any better. In fact, they're a big reason for why this is the case at all. The UFT, statewide NYSUT, and the AFT devote immense sums towards political activism, oftentimes on issues that have nothing to do with education, and at other times, on things that actively make it worse. Teachers are fed up. Some are leaving the union entirely, since 2018, enrolment of active members has declined at a time when the number of FTE educators increased 7%, and more will probably do so as union leadership broadens the scope of activism into an ever greater range of issues — that members themselves are likely to disagree on. Nor does the phenomenon of unions as political-machines help students — New York City spends an incredible amount of public education in exchange for very poor outcomes. Unions should restore their focus on direct contractual advocacy. Teachers should be able to decide for themselves what political causes they want to support. City Journal
