Databricks CRO Ron Gabrisko on why they only hire technical salespeople: "My salespeople can demo the product themselves. We have an amazing pre-sales team, but everyone in my org should be able to demo. Because if you have technical buyers, you need technical sellers. Technical buyers don't like non-technical...

Where do you draw the line between a technical seller and pre-sales? Additionally while I fully agree with this take, onboarding and training a technical seller takes much more time, which is why many don’t do it… have learnt this lesson myself as well.

This is very true. I’ve experienced it firsthand when selling SDKs and services at @Vserv and @moengage a decade ago. It applies to product management and customer success too. Like he said: if you can’t understand your customer, you really can’t solve any problem for them

This is true. I've first hand experienced it. And how do you manage this friction as a hiring manager: You can teach technology and the vocabuluar within a few weeks (with AI's help) but you can't teach 'how to sell and understand humans" in 2 weeks.

At mid five-figure ACV we tried the AE-runs-the-demo path for a Spark buyer. It added a full week of back and forth. A 12-minute SE loom closed the same week. Hire the technical seller later. Ship the loom first.

.Naval on Finding Technical Co-founders Join the conversation: "It's getting harder and harder because these days those people just go and start their own company. So what do you bring to the table that a good technical co-founder would not have? That's number one. And that would either mean you have some particular deep insight and relationships into a market and you have capital because you've got to bring a lot to the table because you're not creating the product anymore. Or secondly, you have to have a relationship that's pre-existing. You worked together before at some company or you've gone to school together. Outside of those cases, it's incredibly hard to recruit a quality technical co-founder. And I'm not even sure you're in a position to start a company. This is why so many companies come out of universities or come out of the Bay Area because there you're just very likely to have business founders and technical founders next to each other. The business founders at least have enough technical experience that they can properly evaluate the technical co-founder. And then the business founder has to hustle and raise money, recruit people, have a vision, have a customer base, have a market ready to go, and have proven themselves. And now lots and lots of other things to balance out the skills a technical founder brings to the table. There are now more successful cases of solo technical founders starting companies than there are of solo non-technical founders starting companies. So it is an uphill climb. I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you.”

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas says women should be ashamed if they aren't contributing financially or making their man’s life easier “The idea of this is what attracts you to get what I want, it's just prostitution in a sense. But at some point, I don't want you. You're not an equal. You're just a taker. You're not making my life easier. You're making it harder” “If you are a stay at home wife or girlfriend, then you need to understand what that means. When I come home, is the house clean and the suitcase packed? Are the clothes clean and folded? Do your part to make the entity's life easier. That is the point” “If you're not going to put into making money with me, helping me make money, working with me, or working for me. If I have an assistant, as a woman you should be ashamed of yourself. If your NBA husband, your CEO husband, whatever the fuck he is, has an assistant and that's not your fucking job, nah” “Women, if this what you say when someone says, ‘Hey, what do you bring?’ and you say, ‘I bring the table,’ get the fuck out. I have a table, all the fucking chairs, I have the food. Now what do you bring?” “There are eight billion people in the world. As a woman, I don't need you to say, ‘I can't afford that.’ If you can't afford it, find a dude who wants to pay all your bills. I'm looking for someone who wants to be equal because equal means I'm going to treat you equal” “If I'm paying all your bills, you really have no value to me and I'm going to keep fucking whoever I want to fuck. You have no rules over me. Now, if we’re 50-50 you are valued, which means I'm not going to jeopardize this for that”

Jordan Peterson: "If you're competent and silent you will be ignored." "You might think well people should reward you because you're competent. And yes of course they should. But if you're competent and silent then you're just part of the background that's keeping everything functioning" On why you cannot negotiate from a position of weakness: "If you want to push your career forward you have to push it forward. You have to be competent and you have to be strategic" "To be strategic when you negotiate for a new position or a new salary you have to be able to say if you don't give me what I want then something you don't like will happen to you" "It's not a physical threat. It's that you have an option" "You have your CV in order. You're educated and competent and desirable to people outside of your immediate job. You're willing to instantly put yourself on the job market" "So that when you go talk to the person you're negotiating with you're credible" On the one thing most people completely miss about negotiation: "It's very seldom that you're talking to the person who's at the top of the pecking order. What you need to do is tell them a story that they can tell to their boss to make you not a problem" "A good story is look we really need this person because they're hyper competent and they have a better offer" "If you go in there with no power you're going to lose. Obviously" He concludes with the one thing every competent person needs to hear: "The first thing you need to know if you're going to negotiate is that you have to be able to say no. And what no means is that you're not going to do it"
