Beckham effectively became United’s deep playmaker. According to @Statsbomb Beckham completed 38/40 ground and low passes, but also attempted 22 high passes, constantly looking to hit longer, more ambitious balls forward rather than simply recycling possession. It was referred to as a ‘quarterback role,’ using his passing range from deeper areas to try and progress United up the pitch.

United struggled for rhythm though, and the midfield lacked its usual balance. That changed when Sheringham replaced Blomqvist after 67 minutes. Giggs moved back to the left and Beckham shifted towards his more familiar right side. From there Beckham became increasingly influential. He repeatedly got into dangerous crossing positions, fired deliveries into the box and combined brilliantly with Gary Neville, finding him on overlapping and underlapping runs. United were finally able to get Beckham into the areas where he could really hurt Bayern.

Beckham continued to cover an incredible amount of ground as United chased the game, appearing centrally, wide right and even on the left. And ultimately, his biggest influence came from the weapon everyone knew he possessed. Two injury-time corners. Sheringham. Solskjær. 2-1. The rest is history. Not a flawless performance, but a brilliant example of Beckham’s versatility, passing range, work rate and ability to deliver when it mattered most.

I thought he was man of the match by some distance, fabulous player who really stepped up when we were up against it.

He certainly was. He was everywhere. Incredible player.

What I noticed most was, when presented with the option to pass backward, forward, or sideways, Beckham passed forward. And he could do that because his teammates were running and making themselves available. Carrick should show this to the team after training every evening.

Beckham played out of position thst night due to forced changes. But when fina moved into it changed the game. Throwing long balls from Midfield into a tight defence didn’t work for long periods of the game. It created some slight panic, but they went through midfield with ease.
