I think they are looking at the right problem through the wrong ancient text. The better comparison isn't the Bible. It's Plato. In The Republic, Plato constructs perhaps the most enduring argument ever made for rule by people who claim to see what the rest of us cannot. His guardians are not tyrants. They are educated, disciplined, and selected precisely because they supposedly understand reality more clearly than everyone else. That is what makes them dangerous. The central problem of the philosopher-king is not that he is evil. It is that superior knowledge quietly becomes a title to rule. And that is the question Anthropic is forcing us to confront. Suppose Anthropic is right. Suppose there really is a greater-than-ten-percent probability that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence could produce catastrophic consequences. Suppose the public does not understand the technical mechanisms involved. Suppose only a relatively small group of researchers can presently evaluate the danger competently. What follows from that? Certainly we should listen to them. Perhaps we should act. But something does not automatically follow: That the people who can best describe the danger have therefore earned the authority to determine the political response to it. That inference, from expertise to authority, is where the problem begins.
