Illegal immigrants flout our laws because the federal government won’t enforce them. There are many cases of illegal aliens committing a crime, getting deported, returning, and re-offending. This should never happen. I’m signing SB 1036 to increase the classification of a crime committed by a previously deported illegal alien. Illegal immigrants who come to Florida to commit crimes will spend a long time in prison.

So it’s a tool of pragmatism because of the complete, abject failure of the federal government. Sanctuary policies are unnecessary if we had comprehensive immigration reform and a federal response that was adequate to the task. But in the absence of that, it’s grown from the ’70s and ’80s and ’90s into the 2000s. Shapiro: Sanctuary policy obviously has had a massive impact as a driver of a tremendous number of illegal immigrants in the state of California. Newsom: I don’t know about that. They avoid looking at the actual demographics of state and federal prisons because the data does not support the narrative they want to push.
