He’s collaborated with Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, and led a successful solo career. Vai studied guitar under Joe Satriani as a teenager and joined Frank Zappa’s band in 1980 at age 20. He went on to play with David Lee Roth on the albums Eat ‘Em and Smile and Skyscraper.

Today in Rock History March 13, 2012 A fight erupts during a Van Halen concert in Manchester, NH, prompting singer David Lee Roth to stop the band’s performance of Roy Orbison’s “(Oh) Pretty Woman.” Roth angrily shouts at the fighters, saying, “What do you think this is, a f-ing mosh pit?” He adds, “You’ve got all the best-looking women on the f-ing east coast here and all you can f-ing think of is f-ing fighting?” As security handles the situation, Roth orders the band to restart the song from the beginning.
