David Cronenberg on why there isn't a sex scene in 'eXistenZ' (1999): "Each movie generates its own little biosphere, and has its own little ecology, and its climate, and you’re attuned to that more than anything else. So when people say, “Is there anything you wouldn’t show on film?” or, “Do you ever draw back?” I’m saying if I do, it’s only because of that biosphere: What is appropriate? What works within the ecology of that movie? So in one movie sex and blood would be very up-front, like 'Crash' (1996), because it’s sort of the subject of the movie, and in another movie, like 'The Dead Zone' (1983), it would not be appropriate. It just doesn’t work somehow; it would be disproportionate. So there’s no sex, really, in 'eXistenZ' (1999), except metaphorically. And there was an opportunity to have sex, to have sex scenes, and we were all willing to do that. But as the film evolved, you know, we just thought that would be wrong. It would take away from the metaphorical sex, which is more interesting, it has more resonance, and if you suddenly threw a real naked sex scene in the middle of it, it would not balance all that, almost invalidate it. You'd rescue princesses from dragons, engage in battles, become a hero. And as time went on, you'd push further and further. Then comes the real turning point. Watts explains: "At some point in the game, you would say, 'Tonight I am going to dream in such a way that I don't know that I'm dreaming,' so that you would take the experience of the dream for complete reality." You'd forget you were God entirely. You'd dream yourself into poverty, disease, agony not out of cruelty, but for the contrast. For the moment you wake up and realise none of it was real. Connor, you're an intelligent man, and I don't believe you don't understand Lowe's views on this. Here he refuses entirely to differentiate between Canadian and Nigerian immigration. It would have been so easy to say here that Canadians would be better, because they're "easier to integrate". He didn't say that, because that's not what he believes. If that is what Lowe believes, then your only argument for Restore is that you and your friends - who obviously do not agree with your leader - are actually running the show. I think that is your argument, and I don't find it persuasive. We've had our disagreements with you at PJ, but you could have been a positive force in Reform. You lost that chance when you got involved with Lowe, perhaps wrongly, but since then your goals have been the same as Lowe's - to build something that you can be part of, rather than something that can win. At least be honest and admit that the value you see in Restore is not in Lowe, who is quite clearly a straightforward Libertarian Conservative and Civic Nationalist - and stop trying to pretend he's something other than that.
