Dear Brian Roemmele, Geologists think this is basically a collapsed volcano. However, actually is more consistent with a massive electrical discharge scar... ...and there's one on Mars. Electrical discharge leaves a variety of signature geological scars. This is one of many.

In some ways I would argue it is both. It was a volcano that eroded. But I suspect the volcano was electrically driven, with its antipode now being subduced near present-day Tonga. I intend to discuss this particular antipodal pair in Part 2 of this article:

I would ask why there are so few geologists on Twitter these days. The circular Richat Structure is one of the most famous geological features on Earth so far photographed from space since the first orbital satellites were launched in the fifties. Calling the Richat Structure "basically a collapsed volcano" is far too simplistic. The roughly 40 km-wide concentric rings are mainly composed of eroded sedimentary rock layers that were uplifted into a large geological dome. Magma did intrude into the area, and there is clear evidence of volcanic and hydrothermal activity, with some studies even proposing a localized caldera-style collapse near the center. One 2014 study proposed a piston-like caldera collapse in the central part of the Richat Structure, based on circular fractures, repeated sedimentary layers, volcanic rocks concentrated toward the center, and intrusive rocks occurring farther outward: However, that does not mean the entire Eye of Africa is simply the crater of one enormous collapsed volcano. A 2024 study instead describes a much more complex, multi-stage igneous history involving intrusion, doming, hydrothermal alteration, and extensive erosion, which ultimately produced the concentric structure visible today. Another thing people often overlook is the surrounding topography. There are nearby mountains (not that tall though like 500 meters at least), ridges, plateaus, and naturally elevated hills that need to be considered as part of the wider geological landscape, rather than studying the Richat Structure in isolation. I would really like to see the entire surrounding region mapped in much greater detail and made more accessible for geological fieldwork. That would help separate the actual geology from claims that the structure represents Atlantis. In my opinion Atlantis got somehow mixed in names of tribes and Mount Atlas and history of those people of the time. Like Pillars of Hercules in Gibraltar and Ceuta. The geography fits perfectly to ancient Greeks and their mottos like Non plus ultra, "nothing further beyond", serving as a warning to sailors and navigators to go no further.
