Dear Korea 🇰🇷, You’re the first country where our Solution Engineering team successfully stress-tested SMS-based crypto payments when devices lack internet access but can still barely connect to a telecom tower (for whatever reason: roaming issues, low signal at basement, natural disaster scenarios).

Sounds perfect for my overflow idea. Was looking into whether devices can perform well under extreme circumstances such as natural disaster scenarios. As a Korean, very bullish. As a builder on SUI and Walrus, also very bullish. Appreciate your work Kostas 🙏

According to the GSMA, globally there are 3.6 billion people (almost half the world’s population) who do not use mobile internet. This includes the ‘connectivity gap,’ which is about 400 million people who are not covered by mobile networks at all. They’re unconnected because traditional mobile networks struggle to invest in hard-to-reach places. But, at #WorldMobile, we won’t take distance for an answer. We’ll go the extra mile to connect the seemingly unconnectable, because we know connection is everything. At dawn this morning, close to Massingir, #Mozambique, we went the extra-mile, and history was made. We’re delighted to have successfully launched: - The first commercial telecoms #aerostat in #Africa. - The first aerostat in Southeast Africa. - The biggest aerostat World Mobile has used to date. Many said it could not be done, but we have persevered with the objective of delivering on our mission to connect the unconnected and serve the underserved. Mozambique’s internet user rate stood at a mere 23% of the total population in 2022, a shocking figure given that almost 62% of its populace live in rural areas. This lack of #connectivity has a significant impact on access to #healthcare, #education, #banking, and economic opportunities. We believe that our unique, #decentralised, hybrid dynamic network can help provide a solution to Mozambique’s connectivity challenges. We believe it paves the way to solving connectivity challenges across the globe. Aerostats are a significant piece of this solution, and this launch sets the foundation for our commercial deployment of decentralised aerostats across Africa and beyond. We’re grateful to all those who have supported our cause so far, and believed in our vision despite the challenges faced along the way. Remember, we did this together. Together, let’s connect the unconnected. Together, let’s connect the World. Together, we’re unstoppable. #AerostatLaunchMozambique #Blockchain #Telecoms

Zack Polanski, "I often say we live in rip off Britain" "A country where wages have stalled, rents have risen, and bills are out of control" "We're not a poor country, we have so many riches" "But we're paying a high price for a low standard of living" "But it's not just our bills and our wages where we're being ripped off, it's the very world around us that is being robbed from us" "Just as the biggest corporations are taking money from those who can least afford it" "They're extracting value from our natural world" "None of this is an accident" "Those choices which have felled our trees, poured pesticides in our fields, and polluted our rivers, those choices have authors" "But they can be reversed" "We're at a turning point" "If we get this right we can change the way we feel about this planet of ours" "We connect with people and places around us in a new way" "We find a love for our place, not based on narrow nationalism nor race, nor migration status, but on the roots that run much deeper than all of those things, the roots that unite us" "Because twice in the past six years we've been starkly reminded how vulnerable our planet is" "Just a few years ago a deadly virus ripped through the population.. The way many of us clung to our well being were the daily walks around the park" "And this summer when the heat grew unbearable. Burning our skin, muddying our thoughts, often the only reprieve was the shade of a tree, or the cooling waters of a river or a sea" "And both the pandemic and this summer's extreme temperatures brought into stark relief what it means to have access to nature"

“Geniuses only.” Nivi: To me, the missing ingredient in most people’s recruiting is intolerance. You should really just treat every employee in the company, including yourself, as an enemy agent that’s trying to destroy the company by bringing mediocre talent into the business. It’s unfortunately just the nature of human nature. Naval: My co-founder and I have a new criterion in our company: “Geniuses only.” It’s a harsh word, but it sets a very high bar. You can just look around for who’s not a genius. The only way you’re going to attract geniuses—whatever that term means to you—is by having a company full of geniuses. And if someone’s not a genius, then either you’re transitioning into the phase where you can no longer hire geniuses and you just need to scale up for whatever reason, or you can just show that person the door because you hired them prematurely for the kind of company you’re trying to build. Now, this is very difficult. You’re lucky if you can hire one genius a month. You as a founder have to identify them and do whatever it takes to recruit them and motivate them. So it’s inherently self-limiting. Given that a person probably isn’t going to stick around your company for more than three, four, five years—although in some great companies, people stick around for decades—at that attrition rate you’re talking about a 30 to 50 person company. But if you can even assemble a team of 10 geniuses, you’re way ahead of everybody else. At most companies—the successful ones—the founders, and maybe a few early people are at the genius level. But in the urge and the rush to scale, that gets drowned out too quickly.

Elon Musk just spent seventeen billion dollars to make every cell tower on Earth a relic. Musk: “It will allow SpaceX to deliver high bandwidth connectivity directly from the satellites to the phones.” Not through towers. Not through cables. Not through any infrastructure on the ground. Directly from orbit to the phone in your pocket. For over a century, connectivity followed the same blueprint. Build a tower. Run a cable. Expand the network one piece of ground at a time. Coverage went where the money was. Where the population density justified the investment. Everywhere else got silence. Four billion people still don’t have reliable internet. Not because the technology doesn’t exist. Because no one could justify building a tower where they live. Connectivity was never a technology problem. It was a geography problem disguised as one. Musk: “The phones that are able to use the spectrum that was acquired probably start shipping in around two years.” Two years. Then the phone in your hand connects straight to space. No tower required. No carrier infrastructure between you and the signal. The entire telecom industry was built on one assumption. That connectivity requires ground infrastructure. Every carrier. Every contract. Every coverage map. All products of that assumption. Starlink just bypassed it from orbit. From orbit, every point on Earth is equidistant. The word “remote” only exists because connectivity was built from the ground up. From space, there is no remote. There is no coverage gap. There is no place on Earth harder to reach than any other. The ground decides who gets connected based on where they are. The sky doesn’t know the difference. Human potential was always distributed evenly across the planet. Access to information never was. The gap between those two facts is the greatest waste in human history. We spent a century deciding who deserved access to information based on where they happened to be born. Musk just made that question obsolete from 550 kilometers above the answer.

BAANX AT ETHCC CANNES: THE FUTURE OF PAYMENTS TOOK CENTER STAGE While Cannes is famous for red carpets and film premieres, this year's ETHCC proved that the real blockbuster story was happening on the 4th floor of Palais des Festivals, where Baanx was rewriting the script for crypto payments. THE MAIN EVENT: SIMON JONES ON PAYMENTS EVOLUTION Chief Commercial Officer commanded the Main Stage with a simple but powerful message: "Why spending crypto should feel like spending cash." It wasn't just a presentation, it was a manifesto for the future of finance. Simon, an OG who's been bridging traditional finance and decentralized tech long before it was cool, didn't mince words about what's at stake. His specialty? Finding solutions that make crypto payments more accessible, secure, and impactful. And at ETHCC, he delivered exactly that vision. BUILDING BRANDS THAT USERS ACTUALLY OWN. When asked about "Building a Brand and Product in Web3," Simon dropped some serious knowledge: "Building brands in web3 is how you start to look at different concepts in the product that have been in existence and redefine how you can reach the global audience. Building a brand in web3 is truly about building a brand that people feel they have a level of ownership engagement." This wasn't corporate speak, this was someone who understands that Web3 isn't just about technology; it's about fundamentally changing the relationship between brands and users. emphasized that "web3 branding is how you build something that connects you to the users" and Baanx is living proof of this philosophy. THE MARKET LEADER PLAYBOOK Simon's formula for dominance was refreshingly straightforward: "You got to build a product that people like, in order to be a market leader." But he didn't stop there. He stressed the importance of building "a product that people interact with everyday" while staying true to brand values and helping users understand the real benefits. WHAT Baanx SHOWCASED: THE CRYPTO LIFE REVOLUTION The Baanx Investment team wasn't just talking theory, they were demonstrating real solutions. Their booth became a magnet for anyone curious about earning crypto just by swiping their Crypto Life Life Card. The value prop was clear: fast, transparent, and low-cost solutions for moving money globally, with just a few lines of code for integration. But here's what set them apart: true self-custody solutions. While others promise decentralization, Baanx delivers it, empowering users with full control over their digital assets without relying on third parties. THE ENTERPRISE GAME-CHANGER Simon Jone's track record speaks volumes. Under his leadership, Baanx has secured incredible enterprise partnerships with industry giants like MetaMask 🦊 and Ledger. These aren't just partnerships, they're validation that Baanx is solving real problems for real businesses. LOOKING FORWARD: THE FINTECH REVOLUTION As fintech companies play an increasingly important role in the global economy, Baanx positioned itself as the key driver of growth in the sector. Their platform is already helping well-known fintech brands expand their product offerings and reach new customers. THE CANNES TAKEAWAY What happened at #ETHCC Cannes wasn't just another crypto conference. It was a glimpse into a future where spending crypto feels as natural as spending cash, where brands build genuine ownership relationships with users, and where the bridge between traditional finance and Web3 isn't just a concept, it's a reality. Simon Jones and the $BXX team didn't just attend ETHCC; they owned it. And based on what they showcased, the future of payments is in very capable hands. The question isn't whether crypto payments will go mainstream, it's whether you'll be part of the revolution. 🔗

🌱 🧬 Plant (genetic) engineering lags ~15 years behind other organisms... While the first genetic circuits were built in bacteria in the year 2000, and mammalian circuits followed a couple of years after, it was only until the late 2010s that similar genetic engineering efforts started in plants. However, plants account for 80% of all biomass on Earth, they are our carbon capture machines by excellence, the original source of most pharmaceuticals in the world, and the basis of all of agriculture. When engineered, they can serve as low-cost, natural bioreactors for pharmaceutical and cosmetic ingredients, for textiles and functional food… they can fix more carbon from the air and produce more food and, in some weird cases, they can even be turned into digital data storage devices and metal mining machines. The following is a 20-min Biopunk Tour of the Brophy Lab in Stanford Synthetic Biology, where they are building new genetic engineering tools for plants and their associated microbes, towards a sustainable future. Their PI, Jennifer Brophy, famously built the first logic gates in plants during her postdoc, setting a precedent for the Brophytes 🌱. PhD student Vivian Zhong and Postdoc Alexander Borowsky were kind enough to answer lots of questions about their current work, challenges and opportunities in industrial plant genetic engineering, under- and over-hyped plant biotechnologies, and societal challenges of engineered plants. Just wrapped an incredible few days in Seoul. South Korea is moving fast on stablecoin and digital asset regulation — and the ambition here to do things right is real. Met with an extraordinary range of leaders: superapps like KakaoGroup, leading crypto exchanges, banks, reporters, and influencers building the next generation of internet finance and the agentic economy. Crypto adoption is sky high and the country is focused on doing things the right way. We are proud to announce expanded work with Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, to support responsible adoption of digital assets: We also announced expanded work with Bithumb to enhance stablecoin infrastructure and improve the understanding of stablecoins: We met with the team at Coinone and their dedication to building the safest crypto exchange is clear. We were happy to get to see companies like BDACS building a Korean won-backed stablecoin on Arc, our economic operating system, and leaders from Hashed, Hecto Financial, Danal, Travel Wallet, Samsung Card, Toss, Hyundai Card, Koda, Shinhan Bank, KB Financial Group, Shinhan Bank, Galaxia Moneytree, Woori Bank. There were so many companies and leaders we didn’t get to meet with because travel issues cut our trip short! But our message was clear and consistent: we want to work with local leaders — entrepreneurs and regulators alike — to ensure the internet financial system actually works for businesses and people in South Korea. This is about building together. We will be back.
