This is not survival. This is slow suffocation. Benjamin is a Form Two student at St. Domnic Kasarani moving to Form Three. Last term, he never sat his end-term exams. Not because he failed, not because he refused to learn but because poverty shut the school gate in his face. While his classmates returned to school this term, Benjamin stayed home. Every morning he prepares a jiko and charcoal, waiting for his mother to return from marikiti where she roasts maize for strangers. He waits with hope hope that she will come back with food, hope that something small will remain for rent. This is the routine of a child who should be in class, not counting coins. What he told me today is what truly broke me. He said he is ready to operate a boda boda to help his mother put food on the table, but he is only 17 and has no ID. A child willing to trade his education and safety for survival. That is not courage that is desperation created by neglect. This is how children drop out of school in Kenya. Not because they are lazy, but because the system looks away. Not because parents don’t care, but because they have been pushed beyond their limits. I appeal to Kasarani MP Hon. Do people realise that banning Social media for under 16’s will have the effect of forcing EVERYONE of EVERY age to identify themselves and inevitably that will go down the route of a digital ID scheme within a very short period of time. It’s state oversight of the entire population dressed up as child protection. And huge numbers of kids will get around the checks anyway as is already happening in Australia. The irony of governments on the one hand giving the vote to 16 yr olds and on the other claiming those same kids at 15 yrs and 11 months are unable to determine what is harmful content and so banning them from using their own judgement is laughable..
