Look at the trams, already lacking maintenance in 1998.

Ppl romanticising trams should try to remember that in 1998, the trams use to stop midway on the roads due to frequent powercuts. Passengers had to offboard midway and there was frequent traffic jams.

Kolkata was always gorgeous until the last 2 decades. The maintenance of the city has gone for a toss, unfortunately. When Singapore gained independence in 1965, its founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, famously stated that he wanted Singapore to develop into a metropolis like Calcutta (now Kolkata). At the time, Kolkata was a premier economic, industrial, and cultural hub in Asia.

The first thing I noticed in this video is the greenery. Lots of trees. Such a beautiful sight!

Even 10 years ago, this line had frequent tram services and very good patronage. It was the best route, trams used to run fast and not hindered by road traffic.
