Before Half-Life... there was Fade to Black (1995), a truly brilliant action-adventure game developed by Delphine Software as a sequel to Flashback. It follows hero Conrad Hart, awakened from cryogenic sleep in an alien prison on the Moon. You have to explore, fight, solve puzzles, and navigate a sci-fi conspiracy in a fully 3D polygonal world. Back in the day, it felt revolutionary with smooth 3D graphics, dynamic camera angles, and a perfect blend of shooting, platforming, and adventure way before Tomb Raider took the crown. Story, atmosphere, pace, graphics, sound effects - it was the whole package. In 1995, this was a real masterclass.

26 years ago today (13 September 1999), the Moon was blasted out of orbit in "Space: 1999." Who else watched this series? I loved it. What a great premise, based on real concerns too. Read on. Premiering in July 1975 in Australia and on September 4th in the UK, "Space: 1999" was a sci-fi series where a nuclear waste explosion propels the Moon into space. This idea was inspired by actual worries about nuclear disposal. A 1972 U.S. National Academy of Sciences report warned of potential criticality risks in lunar storage sites. Yes, people seriously considered storing nuclear waste on the Moon. What a terrible idea, but what a great concept for a TV series! With all the recent talk about going to the Moon and setting up a base there, this concept isn't new. The NAS warning highlights that we've been discussing lunar bases for decades. Starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, this 1975 sci-fi classic impressed with groundbreaking visual effects and design. Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, a renowned British husband-and-wife team, they were also known for their work in science fiction series like Thunderbirds and UFO. Space Quest: Chapter I: The Sarien Encounter turns 40 years old this year. The Space Quest series has been my favorite within the Sierra universe, Roger is simply the best anti-hero ever. At the time it was a groundbreaking graphic adventure (crafted by Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy). Players control Roger Wilco, a bumbling janitor aboard the starship Arcada, who awakens to a Sarien alien invasion. The Star Generator - a doomsday device - is stolen and and a self-destruct timer is started. Roger escapes to Kerona's Ulence Flats, wins buckazoids at slots, buys a junker ship, and infiltrates the Sarien cruiser Deltaur to save Xenon. Powered by an AGI engine with text parser, pseudo-3D, and hilarious deaths (many, many deaths...), it parodies Star Wars/Star Trek and other sci-fi themed movies. If you grew up in the 80s and liked advneture games, I am quite sure you played Space Quest (or at least heard of it).

For me, this was the moment when Halo went from being a War Story with futuristic elements to a Sci-fi Superhero Story. It’s an impossible shot. The camera flies around and through objects, time speeds up and slows down at random, the camera anticipates events that are scripted instead of reacting to capture them, there is no sense of space or proximity or cause and effect... It's like they gave the camera to Superman. That's all fine in a Superhero Story, but it breaks the stakes of a War Story. If the audience perspective is not grounded, then the stakes of the story are not grounded. It's exciting and flashy, but has as much impact as a kid playing with dolls.
