26 years ago today (13 September 1999), the Moon was blasted out of orbit in "Space: 1999." Who else watched this series? I loved it. What a great premise, based on real concerns too. Read on. Premiering in July 1975 in Australia and on September 4th in the UK, "Space: 1999" was a sci-fi series where a nuclear waste explosion propels the Moon into space. This idea was inspired by actual worries about nuclear disposal. A 1972 U.S. National Academy of Sciences report warned of potential criticality risks in lunar storage sites. Yes, people seriously considered storing nuclear waste on the Moon. What a terrible idea, but what a great concept for a TV series! With all the recent talk about going to the Moon and setting up a base there, this concept isn't new. The NAS warning highlights that we've been discussing lunar bases for decades. Starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, this 1975 sci-fi classic impressed with groundbreaking visual effects and design. Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, a renowned British husband-and-wife team, they were also known for their work in science fiction series like Thunderbirds and UFO.
