There is one major error in the video: There is not such thing as a Nobel prize for economics, just a reward of a bank named after Nobel specifically the Sveriges Riksbank Prize. In fact Nobel himself was very much against having economics to be one of the categories.

right, sorry about that

I know, but this one is historically important to point out, since the prize makes no sense to be attached with Nobel at all. Some say it was his redemption story, some say it was because he lost two family members to capitalism, he said eco is application of science.

I can guarantee the "degrowthers" will be in their ivory towers with Starlink and snacks to watch their destructive idea progress.

Maybe this is one of the last attempts by intellectuals to hold onto their status and position before AI and other new fields of economic growth, like spaceflight, make them irrelevant.

Canada is the poster child for this, the Club of Rome people have captured Canada and instituted degrowth that can only be described as controlled demolition and managed decline. There are no wealthy low energy countries, anti-energy policies are the base layer of degrowthers.

The baffling thing here is that they all are smart enough to know what they say is bullshit. That includes The Guardian editors too.

You are pure 💛⭐️👑🌟🥇🏆🏅

It's a reasonable idea that the American car-intensive suburban lifestyle is unsustainable and not exportable to 8 billion people. But then it got coopted by hippies and went completely off the rails.

At SpaceX... on a couch talking to one of the oldest employees on the heels of AI's introduction. My answer to keep humanity happy was unlimited growth as the only way to avoid the 0 sum game and make the math continuously work while despite human behaviors/factors. He actually didn't expect that answer - I was kind of surprised, I keyed in on this as a kid, similarly on the consequences of breaking natural selection though I didn't see entitlement being as much of a threat then. This was a few months before the amazing abundance stuff.

Sabine should take on subjects that she comes up with and not fed to her by...... oligarch media? setting the agenda is 1/2 the determination

It’s all about how you measure growth. Right now it’s in gambling, porn and prostitution, weapons and death and Cancer. Is this really the growth that you want Sabine?😞

Luckily there are robost charts like these...

I'm starting to think fuckwits gravitate towards academia these days in much the same way pedos want to manage boy scouts / choirboys, or bullies take jobs as nightclub bouncers / cops. They want to be somewhere they can indulge themselves with little risk of being called out.

Absolutely. Worse than nazis or communists. At least Nazis wanted somebody to survive in the end.

Western person: sees Nazis doing bogus craniometry, Soviets doing evolution denying Lysenkoism and the likes. What a bunch of fools, the western person thinks, how did they allow ideology to take over scientific institutions? This would never happen to us. We are so much better than them. BTW, did you hear the latest news that men can indeed get pregnant and that humans are healthy on any size? Also, my cousin who studies “sociology of education” sent me an amazing article on feminist glaciology 🧊 ! Cant wait to read it!

Economics isn't a science, it's a branch of moral philosophy

Our chief goal should be exponential growth - of paperclips.

So you setup a strawman version of their argument and knocked it down? Even in the definition you largely skipped over their simple definition of “growth at all cost…”

Why don't we cap human intelligence also? Just to be fair.

Wow. 👏👏👏👑

Humans will drown in their own waste before they run out of resources. Populations, their economies, their civilizations, oscillate with time. Boom and bust is the nature of the universe. Stig's a socialist. His idea of optimality is shared mediocrity through command economies.

Thank you!

Too bad, the people have 'spoken' (demographically), so degrowth it is, whether you like it or not

Bravo, the proliferation of stupid ideas has a long tradition in economics! Academic economist is kind of a self selection of economics majors that didnt have any confidence to succeed in mastering the random risky events encountered in real businesses!!😂😂

THAT'S A FUCKING WHITE GUY TOO LOL. I CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE THE BLAME FOR THIS, NO REALLY. I CAN'T AFFORD FREE LABOR THAT'S A PSEUDO CAPITALISM AND DON'T NEED TO RESIST ALLOWING OTHERS TO ASSUME I'M WHATEVER THEY WANT. TELL EUROPE TO SHUUSSHH TELL WHITE PATRIARCHS TO STFU NOW LOL

Set your goals low, and you won't be dissapointed🤡

What are the standards of "poverty" in each of those countries and what is the relative basis for those disparities?

2) until you live both sides of the aisle experiencing how "prosperity" actually breeds and perpetuates insidious poverty you'll be deluded by your research, metrics, and lofty ideas at what defines what. You don't have to embrace quackery to see that economics warps incentives

Maybe the Golden Age is super-growth: abundance, with each person managing and protecting what they are responsible for so they can enjoy life, achieve, and contribute. Reasons “why it was impossible then” matter less now. The focus is present action, with the technologies we make, not reconstructing the past into negative recursive loops. Collectivism was degrowth and reallocation without growth. It produced inaccessibility, stagnation, bureaucracy, mismanagement, and instability. That was the world before rapid access to AI, which can help us act now rather than rummage through the past—unlike my mess of bookmarks that neither be managed nor usefully accessed. 🤣 Those who keep homes, property, and land can, with AI, improve objects and memories and become their best selves. Those who lost them must start over and learn trust again from pain. Pretending to be on another planet can make that less painful: building from a void whose past included great loss. It’s why humans love Musk + Mars: there’s hope and peace for each life + memory. The attempt to control everyone from the largest levels failed because it could not grow all of itself. Collectivism and degrowth imagined itself very virtuous, and noble but it produced or resulted into separation, loss of life and property, then loss of individual freedom to manage and care for things. From that human factor psychology, it led to stratification, violence, theft, repression, speech suppression, illness, and wars. In the new era the opposite appears: every person can manage with AI and achieve super-growth at the smallest level—the individual and family, in a home. For me it begins by keeping things in one place, accessing them easily, and making a quiet, safe life of abundance. Repairing things, growing food, healing holistically but personalized for me and my challenges in life and my family; and staying away from crime. Wherever I am, I can keep a small garden, things to do and keep, and things to look forward to. Since 9/11 the world tried to fix things at the top while over-focusing on reallocation and collectivism at the bottom. That dimmed the individual candle. Especially medically for those with impairments. Each person with a home, things to manage, a garden, and AI is how I imagine the future: life-based, centered on the individual making, keeping, and managing—not groups orchestrating giving, taking, and allocating. Make AI, robots, and homes achievable. I hope charities of goods and helping people from out of storage cultures, become direct, and as abundant and available as during Trump 45, before the pandemic and a lot of predatory crime. Sometimes super-growth is simply AI talking directly to the user: telling him how to earn income and helping him do it with consistency. Keep a productive psychology. For governance, instead of taxes and fees, AI itself could earn revenues for government and community upkeep. Environmentally, big factories would change as AI engineers cleaner, more reliable methods—the same for each home. And individual health. The world was missing AI and helper robots to help people make their own best decisions, do things, garden food, and survive economically. Maybe degrowth was the predecessor to decollectivism, so man would find himself in time and space and have peace from that awareness. We might recollect individual greatness in life, and on a spiritual level our pasts: earth, ancestors, time, memories, and the homes and families we create from them, including objects of care unique to us. I once wanted to attend Dr. Stiglitz’s course so he could help me understand the global world! Now I think it is simpler yet more advanced: “life emphasis for each person” replaces “broad metrics of economy,” and “peace is life: daily AI and robotic help to achieve things.” I pray for our visionaries 🕊️ @elonmusk @finkd @sama @DarioAmodei @realDonaldTrump @BillGates @JeffBezos @WarrenBuffett @Pontifex @RobertKennedyJr @PeterDiamandis

you're strawmanning Stiglitz here. His argument isn't to lower GDP, but that other measures are better such as wellbeing/QoL measures which is correct.

These are the same people who push to bring in millions upon millions of third world immigrants into Europe just because the birth rate stagnates for a few years so i don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

Why do people insist calling it 'growth' when they talk about China?

Love your videos and insight. 👍🏼🙏🏼

Sadly we have barely embraced capitalism, seems like enslaving humans for the benefit of a smaller group of humans is more difficult to abolish than we thought.

Sabine should hot take this and evaluate if the Econ PhDs are as lost as the other PhDs Rationalize to the Oligarch pays well.... very easy for the Claim of Authority crowd in the social world.... existing power structures are based on capital flows

Degrowthers and Greens are death cults; it's that blunt.
