New UAE Armored Vehicles Deployed in Al-Mukalla as STC Reinforcements Continue || #Yemen New UAE armored vehicles have been sighted in Al-Mukalla, Hadramout, reinforcing forces loyal to the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) amid rising tensions in eastern Yemen. The vehicles appear unaffected by the recent strike on the port, suggesting that the latest military deployment and supply lines remain intact despite ongoing escalation and security developments in the region.

Another example of UAE soft power in southwestern Yemen has emerged through the Southern Transitional Council المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي. Supporters of the UAE-backed STC circulated footage from Al-Dhale’-Lahij governorate(s) showing what they claim are National Shield Forces قوات درع الوطن deployed near al-Anad air base preventing them from entering Aden to attend a rally called by the ousted STC leader عيدروس الزُبيدي - Aidaros Alzubidi. Last week, several senior members of the STC based in Riyadh announced the dissolution of the STC. However, factions operating in Aden, Mukalla, Socotra, Abu Dhabi, and abroad have rejected that announcement and continue to operate under the STC banner. While the STC enjoys visible support in Al-Dhale’ governorate, it faces staunch popular opposition in the central and eastern southern governorates. Al-Zubaidi has been formally accused by the internationally recognized Yemeni government of leading a rebellion and committing acts of treason, underscoring the contested legitimacy surrounding UAE-backed political actors in South Yemen. Saudi warplanes carried out a wave of strikes in southern Yemen on yesterday, after UAE backed Southern Transitional Council leader Aidarous al Zubaidi ignored a Riyadh ultimatum and refused to attend emergency talks, according to regional and international reports. The strikes hit positions in al Dhalea linked to the Southern Transitional Council, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and the UAE backed faction it had previously treated as a partner. Hospital and medical sources said 4 people were killed, all civilians, with 14 others wounded. The Guardian cited an STC official as saying 2 people were killed and 14 injured near al Zubaidi’s home village. Separately, pro STC accounts citing Yemeni sources claim detainees from prisons in Hadhramaut were freed or relocated by Saudi backed forces. Those reports said operations prioritized territorial control, potentially at the expense of civilian safety, but the claims remain unconfirmed.

Despite the defeat and dissolution of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) after Saudi Arabia's 🇸🇦 offensive, South Yemen 🇾🇪 civilians continue to protest. The STC was the UAE 🇦🇪 backed militia that was controling part of South Yemen and launched a large offensive that nearly managed to merge the pro-saudi internationnaly recognized Yemen and the STC into a single state in late december 2025. Since Yemen is already cut between the north (Houthis rebels, shia muslim) and the south/east (STC, gov., sunni muslim), part of the southern population wanted to revive South Yemen/South Arabia state., which was already independant between 1967 and 1990. When the STC launched its offensive, it didn't face any large resistance and was welcomed by part of the population. However, the situation quickly reversed when Saudi Arabia and Yemen's army intervened and destroyed in a few days the dreams of independence of the pro-UAE STC. However, the population continues to widely protest in most of South Yemen's cities, calling for independence. For now, this is not the KSA's priority since it would prefer a unified state to two Yemeni states at its southern border. A pro-Iran and pro-Emirati state at its southern border would have been a nightmare for Riyadh...

Meanwhile, on the political front, the leader of the Southern Transitional Council announced the start of a roadmap for the independence of “South Arabia,” which would culminate on January 2, 2028. Despite these statements, on January 3, YNA forces entered the rest of the governorates of Hadramaut and Mahrah following the massive withdrawal of STC forces to the governorate of Abyan, managing to reverse the South Yemeni gains of a month ago in what appears to be a resounding victory for Saudi Arabia over the UAE in Yemen.
