The Delta Force rescue of Roy Hallums. On November 1, 2004, gunmen stormed a compound in Baghdad’s Mansour district and seized American contractor Roy Hallums along with several colleagues. Hallums, who worked for a company supplying food to Iraqi forces, vanished into a nightmare that would last 311 days. For months his family had almost no proof he was alive, until a January 2005 video showed him bound, bearded, and pleading with a rifle at his head. Other hostages were released, but Hallums was not. His captors demanded $12 million. He was shuffled between safe houses, beaten, and eventually sealed in a cramped concrete cell under the floor of a farmhouse south of Baghdad, surviving on air through a narrow tube. The break came in early September 2005. Intelligence work, detainee interrogations, and the quiet work of analysts and operators finally produced a location. On the morning of September 7, Delta Force operators lifted off in 160th SOAR helicopters and hit a farmhouse in the Triangle of Death, about 15 miles south of the capital. The kidnappers had already fled. Inside, the team found no obvious basement. Then they discovered a hatch hidden beneath a freezer. They broke through. An operator dropped into the darkness, looked at the bound, disoriented man inside, and asked the only question that mattered: “Are you Roy?” “Yes.” “Jackpot.” Hallums and an Iraqi hostage were pulled from the hole. A Delta operator pressed a small American flag patch into Hallums’ hand, and after more than ten months underground, he was free.

Huge Announcement! 🚨 I’ve partnered with Christian Ruf and Uncommon Elite to bring elite leadership to small businesses by connecting them with former special forces operators. Over the last three years, we’ve supported the acquisition and operations of over a billion dollars’ worth of American small businesses. And almost every entrepreneur I’ve spoken to shares the same challenge: Finding good help and good operators to fill the day-to-day leadership. Through this work, one thing has become crystal clear to me. Nobody is better equipped to step into tough entrepreneurial roles—leading with discipline, execution, vision, and strength—than veterans, especially those from special operations. Christian is building a game-changing pipeline to place the best of the best from Delta Force, Navy SEALs, the 160th Night Stalkers, and other elite units into small business leadership roles. This mission isn’t just important—it’s essential for the businesses we serve. These operators have already proven they can perform under pressure, adapt quickly, and lead teams to success. It’s also awesome to get to support and serve our incredible veterans as they move into, and throughout, the private sector. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know Christian personally over the last year and a half, both personally and professionally. He’s one of the most honest, strategic, and high-integrity people I’ve met. Partnering with him and Uncommon Elite is an honor. If you want to learn more about how adding a former special forces operator to your business can take it to the next level, reach out to Christian Ruf or me.
