The background singer was trying to get her to stay in the right place and not turn her back to the audience. This is really sad. I saw one man saying at a recent show he attended, Gladys had her back turned to the audience for about half an hour. Her dementia has reached a point that it is painfully obvious and it’s truly shameful that her husband is putting her out on the road when she is clearly not well. She should be able to live out her final years with dignity, and this is very undignified. One of my great aunts had dementia in her final years, and her behavior was so bad at some times that at one point that we were very fearful that she wound wander off and get injured. She was in her 80s and had lived in the same house since her childhood, and sometimes she would get this determination to go home, and we could not convince her that she was already at home. She would sometimes not recognize her only child, which was heartbreaking for her daughter. I always thought about how embarrassed and humiliated she would have been if she had been in her right mind. This makes me very sad for Gladys.

It’s alright. She loves what she does, and she definitely loves and appreciates her audiences. We all know the words to the songs, so we just sing along with her and help a bit if needed. I’ll add this — her backup singers and band are fantastic. They don’t miss a cue.
