@SenWhitehouse The only way to save Social Security without cutting benefits is to scrap the cap on taxable income subject to the FICA Payroll tax. If all income were taxed at the 12.6% payroll tax rate instead of the first $184500 Social Security would be solvent until the next century.

@SenWhitehouse The average benefit for SS recipients is $23,160 a year. I'm retired, I contributed to my own 401K thought-out my life, I pray for those that didn't. Wish I had the 6.2% that the Gov collected from every paycheck in my own 401k. Your employer also contributes 6.2% to SS.

Why do you promote a flawed system? The contributions should go into contributor owned target date funds they cannot touch. They get a portion of earnings from the account monthly at retirement. Balance at death transfers to target date fund accounts of their heirs. Pay to bridge existing retirees and those without enough time invested in the TDFs with taxes on higher income earners.

The democrat’s legislation on Social Security is to scrap the cap, which would force people to continue contributing and then would screw them out of the corresponding, formulaic benefit. It would be a 12.4% tax increase and immoral theft. Don’t listen to tax and spend democrats.

Democrat President Lyndon B. Johnson was the first president to integrate Social Security into a single "unified budget" in 1968 (effective in fiscal year 1969). This allowed the federal government to use Social Security surplus revenue for general government spending while issuing an IOU thru Treasury bonds to the trust fund. Democrats created the problem of social security insolvency!
