@Awake_IL At a glance, it looks like that bill puts their homeschooling policy more in line with many other states. It looks a lot like what my family had to do when I was home educated for part of my childhood. It should therefore be opposed.

Illinois parents urgently need school choice alternatives. That was reinforced for me yesterday after my visit to St. Patrick's, a private school in Springfield, Illinois. I was so impressed with the student engagement, discipline and participation – and the teaching of values. Contrast that to nearby Feitshans Elementary, a public school in Springfield. There just 2% of kids read at grade level. Only 1% are at grade level in math. Governor JB Pritzker and Democratic supermajorities killed school choice at the end of 2023. They made Illinois the first state in the country to wipe out school choice. Public schools in poor areas are failing kids. Only 30% are reading at their grade level, and many come from broken families. With school choice, these kids have an opportunity to better their lives and expand their potential. The reality is we have to try something different than the same failed policies the Democrat-backed teachers’ unions have given poor families and students.

Only 1 out of every 4 Chicago Public Schools students can read at grade level, and only 17% are proficient in math. Since 2019, CPS’s budget has grown by more than 57% to over $9 billion, yet there has been no significant improvement in test scores. Just 21% of students in Chicago can read and do math at an eighth-grade proficiency level. At Douglas Academy High School, which has the capacity for more than 900 students, only 34 were enrolled in 2024. The school spent $68,091 per student, 3x the average, yet failed to produce a single student proficient in either math or English at grade level.

This is Tina Kotek’s Oregon, she’s been falling students and parents, for almost four years, and we’ve had enough. When I’m Governor, we’re going to fix our schools and make sure funding goes to helping kids learn, not failed agendas and ideologies.
