If you want to call someone an arsonist, you should check who is actually playing with fire. The “hundreds of billions” Speaker Johnson is attacking are the enhanced ACA subsidies that are the only thing keeping premiums from jumping when the clock runs out. Democrats are trying to extend them because without that extension, people at the lower and middle end of the income scale watch their monthly bill double while the insurance companies are just fine. You can absolutely go after fraud, overbilling, and bad contracts. What you cannot do is pretend that letting those subsidies vanish is anything but a rate hike for the exact families you claim to defend. The same week this majority killed SAVE and told seven million borrowers to go find a more expensive repayment plan, it is accusing Democrats of hypocrisy for trying to keep health coverage affordable. That is not an affordability agenda. It is a transfer of risk back onto people who get sick, get laid off, or simply get priced out. If Republicans truly believe you “cannot be an arsonist and a firefighter,” then the test is simple: stop setting fires under student debt and health insurance and calling it reform. Put the fraud cops on the companies that game the system, keep the protections that keep the bills down, and then we can have a serious conversation about affordability that is measured in dollars, not slogans.
