Sir Keir Starmer has issued an ultimatum to resident doctors to call off their strikes or lose the current deal on the table. The Prime Minister has threatened to withdraw an offer of thousands of extra specialty NHS training posts if the British Medical Association follows through on its threat of a six-day strike after Easter. Last week, the resident doctors' committee rejected a pay rise offer of up to 7.1% without putting it to members for a vote.

Denmark’s🇩🇰 forced sterilisation of Inuit girls in Greenland was colonial social engineering. Between the 1960s and 1990s, the Danish state imposed birth-control devices on an estimated 4500 Inuit girls and women, often without consent, to regulate population growth. Over 4000 girls were sterilised in the 1960s-70s, which represented half of the fertile women in Greenland at the time. This was about managing a colonised labour force, reducing welfare costs, and brutally reshaping Greenlandic society to fit the needs of the metropolitan centre in Denmark. Denmark simply did not want to cover the costs of housing and healthcare for a booming population in Greenland, as it would have taken away from spending on the population in mainland Denmark. Under imperialism, Indigenous bodies become sites of economic planning. Reproduction itself is barbarically subordinated to capital and the state. When surplus populations are deemed “unproductive” or “costly,” coercion and sterilisation replaces consent. Denmark may have apologised, but only once the horrors were uncovered decades later. The apology means nothing without confronting the system that enabled it: colonial capitalism, under the mask of a supposedly liberal state that lectured the global south about “human rights” while enforcing racist colonial domination in practice.

Without these jobs, doctors cannot progress to become Consultants or GPs. This is not an accident. The Government has capped training posts, forcing qualified doctors into unemployment or out of the NHS altogether. At the same time, Wes Streeting is recommending a real terms pay cut for doctors in the coming months. The combination of a worsening jobs crisis and continued pay erosion is why resident doctors in England are being re-balloted. Resident doctors in England: Post your ballot back on jobs and pay now.
