A soundtrack appearance gave Smashing Pumpkins one of their defining early songs without placing it on a studio album. “Drown” was recorded during the period between Gish and Siamese Dream and released on the 1992 soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s Singles, alongside tracks by several major Seattle bands. At more than eight minutes in its original form, the recording gradually disappears into an extended wash of feedback and guitar noise. The soundtrack version was produced by Butch Vig and Billy Corgan. By Pinkpop on 23 May 1994, “Drown” had developed into an expansive live favourite as the success of Siamese Dream pushed the Pumpkins towards a much larger audience.
