The design captured in this footage from nearly a hundred years ago reflects precisely that era’s thoughtful engineering, as detailed in US Patent 1,824,675 for a side car frame for bicycles. The interwar years brought rapid urbanization and shifting family needs across American cities. Automobiles remained a luxury beyond the reach of most households, while traditional perambulators confined parents—often mothers managing household errands—to short walking distances. Streets shared with pedestrians, streetcars, and early motor vehicles demanded nimble yet stable transport. Bicycle sidecars emerged as an elegant response, extending daily journeys while shielding infants from dust, vibration, and weather. These attachments allowed families to navigate growing suburbs and urban centers with greater independence, turning routine outings into manageable realities amid economic pressures and expanding city life. Such innovations highlighted a broader societal shift toward resourceful personal mobility. Engineers focused on lightweight yet sturdy constructions that preserved the bicycle’s balance and handling, addressing the practical limitations of earlier carriages without adding undue complexity or cost. Linn Royal of Illinois filed this patent in 1930 to meet those exact challenges, creating a frame that was “exceedingly simple, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable,” with parts “capable of being assembled and disassembled… in an easy manner” and “thoroughly efficient and reliable in use.” His use of universal joints and diagonal bracing let the sidecar lean naturally with the bicycle through turns, a clever detail that ensured stability on uneven roads. You would need a million today just to get it through health and safety legislation. You would get sued more than likely for some harm or lack of warning labels etc Designers just don't bother; focus efforts where profitable instead. Governments and lawyers did that.
