The fight for HIV medicines taught the world that science only saves lives when it is shared. Today, that lesson is at risk of being forgotten. But we are on the verge of an HIV prevention revolution—we still have the chance to end AIDS by 2030. This is a watershed moment in the fight to #endAIDS as a public health threat. A price of $40 per person per year is a leap forward that will help to unlock the revolutionary potential of long-acting HIV medicines. Gilead Sciences now needs to match that ambition by reducing its price for #lenacapavir, being completely transparent on cost and pricing, expanding its generics license to include all low and middle-income countries, and allowing more people in developing countries to rapidly access these life-saving medicines.

For over two decades, the US Government has been the biggest champion of the global HIV response. The current disruptions in US funding for PEPFAR and other programs are having a devastating impact. If PEPFAR is not fully resumed, and other resources are not found for the HIV response, UNAIDS estimates that over the next four years there would be: ☑️ 6.3 million additional AIDS-related deaths ☑️ 8.7 million additional people newly infected with HIV. The global disruption in HIV prevention and treatment services has led to clinic closures and halted prevention efforts and community systems - threatening to reverse decades of hard-won progress in the fight to #endAIDS. The suddenness of this disruption highlights the need for a planned transition for countries from foreign aid to national ownership in order to ensure continuity of HIV services. UNAIDS Global is working with partners to develop HIV sustainability roadmaps to support countries to lead the critical programmatic, policy and financial aspects of their HIV response. We are promoting national ownership, increasing domestic financing, and ensuring that the hard-earned progress in the HIV response is protected and sustained. A vital lesson in all this is that global problems need global solutions. Pandemics respect no borders, and viruses don’t stop for visas. Ending a pandemic like AIDS requires coordination, solidarity, and compassion. We are hopeful that the 🇺🇸 government will maintain its life-saving contributions through PEPFAR, while countries work urgently to ensure sustainability of their HIV responses with greater national ownership.

Yesterday at the Clinton Global Initiative 2025, I had the privilege of joining President Bill Clinton and Dr. Philippe Duneton, Executive Director of UNITAID, to announce a historic breakthrough in the fight against HIV. A new global pricing agreement will make lenacapavir, a revolutionary twice-yearly HIV prevention injection, available at just USD 40 per person per year, down from USD 28,000. This development will transform access, bringing hope to millions of people in Nigeria and across more than 100 low - and middle-income countries. For Nigeria, this milestone reaffirms our Government’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expand access to innovative prevention, strengthen health systems, and accelerate progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat. #Ebola update: more than 1000 confirmed cases have been reported in #DRC, including 254 deaths. 100 patients have recovered so far, which shows that for many, the virus can be stopped with timely health care. In the past month, World Health Organization (WHO), Africa CDC and partners have supported Ministère de la Santé RDC to increase the number of Ebola Treatment Centres and lab and surveillance capacities, to train more health workers on clinical care and infection prevention and control, and to improve the understanding and involvement of communities. But much more is needed: more treatment centres, more trained health and care workers, more testing, more teams from within communities supporting communities. We need sustained and safe access to reach all affected people. We need continued solidarity from international community to end this outbreak. And ultimately, we need peace for the people of DRC.
