Well, yeah there’s no other way to get that out when the bottom half of the drain is much wider than the top.
Just reading through these comments, I can see that the majority of the people don't actually know what all goes into a manhole. More often than not, the manhole isn't just as narrow and cylindrical as the lid is. The manhole itself is actually a cone shape that is much wider at the base than the top.
