Talking politics with my uber driver Koya. She says she almost cried in the voting booth in 2024, thought Kamala was an intellectual who couldn’t connect with men. She’s heard of all the Detroit mayoral candidates, but doesn’t like Duggan running for governor as independent.

Saw a billboard outside Galesburg for Sheriff Chris Swanson’s Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team. Swanson is expected to run for governor.

Poor soul at Union Station deals with plumbing betrayal, toilet in revolt. He asks the man in the next stall. “Hey man, are you done? Mine is clogged.” The responding silence will echo in my heart forever. No throne will be shared today.

Complimented a guy wearing Cartier glasses, said he’s been here since 9 a.m. He’s trying to get back to his three day old daughter.

Met another guy from West Virginia going all the way to Washington state. Says he’s been here for 10 hours, bought a $35 dollar pizza, will never buy a train ticket again.

They told me this board is a liar. A “glitch,” they say. It keeps changing.

Robert, 50, is unhoused in Chicago. He told me it’s brutally cold to be on the streets right now. He stays in an overnight shelter that kicks them out at 5 a.m. One of many unhoused people seeking help from travelers. I admit I turned away a few of them before giving Robert $15.

I am at last on a train. I left my house almost 13 hours ago.

I’m riding coach. There’s a pretty comfortable lounge to stretch out and eat in.

Some Trump supporters having casual laughs in the lounge about liberal coworkers getting upset over hospital bombings in Gaza. “They’re not doctors, they’re terrorists.”

No hot water, coffee or wifi on the train. Engineer cites some “water issues” in the train cars that put us 5 hours behind.

You can go anywhere in the country and find this style of heinous apartment

Father traveling with his two young daughters is teaching them Magic the Gathering. One girl, probably no older than 10, just beat him with some clever trick I don't understand but they had a great laugh about it.
