Stable 60+ FPS in Three.js — finally. The world renders 149 chunks around the player, while distant terrain is blended into a lightweight placeholder mesh for performance. Move around, and the chunks + fake terrain smoothly fade between each other without killing FPS. World models are instanced too, keeping draw calls low. Retro Game Engine Update 🔥 Exploring a Spatial Compression system in my game engine. Instead of changing object scale, the renderer subtly compresses distant depth in the vertex shader before projection. The goal is to make far-away spaces feel more scenic and theatrical, like a matte painting or miniature set,while keeping nearby space physically grounded and navigable. Same exact scene with this on/off for comparison. What do you think?

Successfully locked 60 fps, this finally starts to feel like a real game. Caliber was running at 15 FPS two days ago. Day 33 of building our own open world game with a loop of AI agents. Today's progress: - 60+ on the counter driving through the full city. - world partition is in, the whole city streams around you instead of loading all at once. now I'm bringing the graphics quality back up while holding the 60. Best quality and best fps is the goal. next up: the npcs and the traffic. What's the first thing you'll do when you get in: drive, explore, or cause chaos?

In my previous post about the #Nioh3 demo, I mentioned that when the game isn’t consistently holding 60 FPS or 120 FPS, several issues can show up. Here’s a clearer breakdown of what's going on. The main reason is that the game speed and physics are tied to the frame rate. When you enable the 120 FPS cap, the engine start overreacting and pushes CPU usage very high, even if the game is still running at around 60 FPS (as shown in the first example). In the second clip, you can see the uneven, jittery camera movement I mentioned before. Notice how much smoother 60 FPS and 120 FPS look compared to the unlocked side. Also, camera movement at 60 FPS is slightly faster than at 120 FPS. In the third clip, player movement is slower when the frame rate is unlocked. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it shows up often enough to be noticeable. Because of how the Katana Engine behaves, the game is clearly designed around 60 FPS. Running at 120 FPS is possible, but it’s only recommended if your system can maintain that target almost all the time, which isn’t easy to achieve. There’s also an alternative workaround where you select the 60 (locked) option and enable Frame Generation (DLSS or FSR 3), as shown in the last clip. The downside is that DLSS Frame Generation tends to show the same stuttery look as when the frame rate isn’t holding a fixed target, likely due to Reflex keeping the frame rate slightly below target. FSR Frame Generation, on the other hand, looks much smoother and works better here.

This is my 4th attempt trying to get realistic caustics, and I think I finally succeeded💪🏻 The coolest part? The caustics change based on the wave behavior above. They move with the waves, and choppier waters create more distortion. The scale, intensity, distortion and attenuation can all be tuned to your tastes.

Factorio is a long-horizon test of world models: the agent has to learn a new system, predict the effects of its actions, and adapt when its assumptions are wrong. That requires a persistent sandbox like E2B that can keep the game running and retain its state while the agent works.
