Did dinosaurs really exist? Can we really be certain that dinosaurs actually existed or are the fossils discovered remains of other species? During the Long Gilded Age in the Amerikkkas, which stretched from the end of Reconstruction (1877) to the start of the Great Depression (1900,) financial elites like J.P. Morgan and industrialists like Andrew Carnegie rose to enormous power and influence. They oversaw the transition of America’s political economy from an unruly and highly competitive form of proprietary capitalism to a more managed economy dominated by large corporate firms. This was precisely when dinosaurs from the American West became an icon of science, and the transition to corporate capitalism affected the practice of vertebrate paleontology in surprisingly concrete and far-reaching ways. Not only did dinosaurs reflect the obsession with all things big and powerful that prevailed at the time, but the science of paleontology itself was profoundly influenced by the creation of large, corporately organised, and bureaucratically managed museums of natural history. Sir Richard Owen, a Fellow of the Royal Society, coined the term “Dinosauria” in 1841-1842 meaning “terrible lizard” or “terrible reptile” to describe fossilized reptile bones found earlier. My humble little work is finally complete. Somehow, it ended up becoming an epic 6 minutes and 24 seconds long. In my twenties, I dreamed of becoming a film director, but I failed. Since then, I haven’t really been able to make anything I could truly call a “work.” Now I live quietly as a poor, single, middle-aged man of 52. But in recent years — especially with the evolution of video-generating AI this year — I’ve found myself able to create something again, and that makes me truly happy. To everyone who has watched over the madness of this 52-year-old guy with such lukewarm kindness: thank you from the bottom of my heart. As long as luck stays on my side, I intend to keep making new works, so I hope you’ll continue to put up with me. For this piece, I aimed for the kind of taste found in films I personally love: Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse. I wanted to make a ridiculous B-movie-style piece of entertainment — something stupid, wild, and only possible through AI. With the rapid evolution of video-generating AI, I think flashy, over-the-top imagery will soon become old hat. So before that happens, I wanted to make one completely outrageous work. Production period: just over one month Budget: I used so many credits that I’d rather not think about it. AI tools used: About 90% of the video was made with Kling 3.0 Omni. Seedance 2.0 was announced partway through production, which made me hesitate, but in the end I only used it very sparingly, for the few parts I just couldn’t express with Kling. From here on, it will become normal to create footage that looks incredibly natural and impressive. In that sense, I also feel that when I look back on this later, the slight traces of “AI-ness” that remain may actually give it a certain charm. I know that only a very rare and generous few will watch a video over six minutes long made by an amateur. But as the film goes on, I became more and more familiar with how to use Kling 3.0 Omni and how to work with its quirks, so I believe the quality improves toward the latter half. Nothing would make me happier than if you stayed with it until the very end.

The Government has since rowed back, insisting that it was only an indicative list. We think it is more than a coincidence that these perceived centre-right platforms were included from the outset, while the left-leaning platform was omitted. In Australia, where this Government borrowed the idea for the ban, BlueSky was not on the list. In typical fashion, however, it has since volunteered to be included. Once Ofcom has finalised the regulations, we will have a clearer idea of what qualifies a platform for the ban. Buried about one meter apart, both had been covered in red ochre and capped with basalt slabs. Animal bones and carved bone artifacts accompanied the burials, including a polished bone spatula with a carved predator-head handle and carved horse-head ornaments. Although direct descendants of the Cro-Magnons, both individuals were short but strongly built. The man was particularly robust, with a powerful chest and broad shoulders. His height was only slightly over 1.60 m, while the woman was even shorter, standing at approximately 1.55 m. (Gerasimov 1955) The anthropologist Mikhail Gerasimov described the Oberkassel man as follows: The Oberkassel man had a very large, massive, elongated skull, with a cranial length of 198 mm, a breadth of 142 mm, and an exceptionally broad cheekbone width of 155 mm. His face was large, broad, and pentagonal, with massive cheekbones, a narrow forehead, a strong lower jaw, a broad projecting chin, and a narrow, high, protruding nose. His orbits were rectangular with prominent brow ridges. It is evident that he was exceptionally strong and undoubtedly handsome in a rugged, masculine way. As a typical Europoid, he almost certainly had a thick beard and mustache, along with straight or slightly wavy hair. The Oberkassel woman is described by Mikhail Gerasimov as follows: Her skull was large and massive, with well-developed relief. It measured 184 mm in length, 132 mm in width, and 131 mm in cheekbone breadth. The brow ridges were well developed, while the nasal bones were large and broad, with only weakly expressed nasal prominences. The occipital bone was broad and almost without curvature. The face was pentagonal, broad, and relatively high, with a massive lower jaw, a broad strongly projecting nose, a slightly prognathic alveolar region, and a projecting chin. The orbits were rectangular with prominent upper margins. Gerasimov noted that the Oberkassel woman lacked typical Cro-Magnon features. Compared with the man, her skull was lighter and less massive. His reconstruction showed some similarities to the Cro-Magnon woman, such as a sloping forehead and deep-set eyes, but differed in having a broader, shorter nose, less facial projection, and a weaker chin. While the Oberkassel man showed more exaggerated facial proportions, the woman retained more ancestral traits. Observations of Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic skulls in Europe show that some exhibit facial flattening as pronounced as that of the most strongly expressed modern Mongolid populations, affecting both the orbital and subnasal regions. The Oberkassel male and female are notable examples: their nasomalar angles measure 143° and 146°, and their zygomaxillary angles 137° and 133°, respectively. Both the absolute values and the relationship between these angles indicate a "harmonious" or "complete" degree of facial flattening comparable to that seen in the most pronounced modern Mongolid populations (V. P. Yakimov, 1956, 1960; I. I. Gokhman, 1958). The Oberkassel individuals were short but robust and, according to Gerasimov, were neither primitive nor unattractive. Their short stature, like that of other late Cro-Magnons, was attributed to the harsh conditions of the Magdalenian period. The Oberkassel Man carried Y-DNA haplogroup I2-V4921 and mtDNA haplogroup U5b1. The Oberkassel Woman shared the same mtDNA haplogroup (Posth et al 2023).

Once we started to work with large global retailers, we needed a better way to scale this process. Ideally, the staff at the store could do this themselves — rather than us flying our team across the world — and then we could lower the cost and timelines. So we built a self-serve version of our survey app, with a tutorial mode designed for beginners. Over time, we collected millions of data points, and so we were able to develop an algorithm which would auto-correct mistakes. In other words, if the surveyor accidentally placed their ground-truth location in the wrong place on the map, we could use our algorithms to detect it, and correct it. So now we have WiFi, and with and our efforts on producing a high quality survey, we have the best WiFi positioning available. With WiFi on its own, it’s achieving 3 meter accuracy. This is a great foundation to build on. WiFi + Motion data To refine this down to 1-meter accuracy, we realised that we could combine WiFi with the same technology behind self-driving cars and robotics: a motion system called SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). SLAM uses the accelerometer, gyroscope and camera system to understand precise device motion. Imagine a car driving through a tunnel, using the motion since its last GPS ping to keep location accurate until it comes out the other side. On a phone, this technology is very reliable, and measures device motion with high precision. But SLAM is measuring motion within its own coordinate space, it’s not aligned with the real world. SLAM tracks the user’s relative motion, like “moved forward 2 meters, then turned left”, but does “forward” mean “north”, or some other direction? It’s not calibrated, so it could mean any location, any direction. We can’t rely on the compass to help us out with this, because phone compasses are notoriously incorrect — everyone knows the frustration of being sent the wrong way down a street. So our job was to align this motion data with the triangulation data we were receiving from WiFi. We designed an algorithm that could simulate every possibility, filter the unlikely scenarios, and hone in your location, using WiFi as an anchor. So WiFi gives us the initial blue dot, SLAM gives us motion, and as the user starts walking and we receive more data, our algorithms can refine location accuracy down to a consistent 1-meter accuracy. We’ve tested these algorithms in many locations, on hundreds of hours of ground-truth data:
