Two years ago today, I intercepted the Tornado of the Century, also known for being the westernmost violent tornado ever documented, which occurred near the town of Didsbury, Alberta. The tornado destroyed two farmsteads while tossing a combine, resulting in a rating of EF4 damage. I have no doubt in my mind after crossing the road and destroying the homes, this tornado was producing EF5 capable winds. Happy Canada Day.

One time, I ripped my pants launching an air cannon into one of the strongest tornadoes I had ever seen! This #tornado reminds me of the Spiritwood, North Dakota pipe from this year. I believe these are the most dangerous of the tornadoes - a slow moving barrel. This #tornado happened near Bennington, Kansas in 2013, and stole all of our probes, piling up dead cattle at the center of its stationary path. On this day, 27 years ago, we chased what is well-known as the strongest #tornado in History. This shows the F5 tornado near peak intensity, just after devastating the community of Bridge Creek, Oklahoma. Aa freshman meteorology students at OU, we stupidly abandoned our Geo Tracker and took shelter under an overpass. Research was published that overpasses can accelerate the tornadic wind and be even more dangerous. We then saw the terrible devastation in Moore, Oklahoma with horses wandering down the highway and people emerging from their destroyed homes. Over 50 people lost their lives from the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak. There was another massive violent tornado with a supercell to the north near Mulhall, Oklahoma that peaked after sunset. The tornado outbreak was still going when I woke up for class the next morning at 7 am. This is a day that Oklahomans will never forget. Enjoy the nice weather this May 3,

The chaos inside of a tornado debris field is unfathomable. Some tornadoes can be so strong and sit in one spot for so long that they shred everything in their path into small pieces. In 2020 when I accidentally shot this tornado in slow-mo at 240 FPS, I originally was a little irritated with myself. However, it's the only 240 FPS piece of footage I have ever shot of a tornado, and it offers a unique and rare look into the chaos of a monster. So much going on inside of the debris field of this tornado near Scarth, MB. This tornado I call the Green Screen tornado. Many people accused me of using a green screen when shooting this video. These days I would be calling it the AI Tornado.

While the Wellfleet Nebraska tornado of 2025 had many extremely photogenic and memorable moments, perhaps my fondest memory was shortly after saving the semi-truck drivers life by stopping him from driving into the tornado, as the tornado nearly died but roared back to life. While not its most photogenic moment, I was yards away from the vortex, hearing its hiss as it spun the sand of the Nebraska sandhills into a slurry. Watching the video again, I feel like I'm back there, hunkered behind my vehicle to protect me from flying debris or hail. As the tornado came back to life I laughed because I had already spent such a long time dancing with this twister, I couldn't believe the show might go on. And it even got BETTER! A ground level view of the tornado damage outside the entrance of the Morgan-Monroe State Forest from Katie Ratzburg. This tornado has preliminary rating of EF-2. A reminder, the EF scale is a damage based scale. For example, a tornado can be in an open field and cause zero damage making it an EF-U (unknown). It is not based on what is appearing on radar (we had debris lofted 20k+ feet in the air). Had this tornado gone through more populated areas it probably would have been a higher rating. We are very thankful it didn’t. Even with that said, many people were still impacted along this tornado’s path in Owen/Monroe counties.
