Benny Safdie & Robert Pattinson were two stand-out actors in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey & it’s the perfect opportunity for me to remind you all that Safdie & Pattinson starred in the 2017 film Good Time (directed by the Safdie Brothers), which is a breathtaking slice of Cinema. I cannot say enough positive things about this movie- I think it’s a little better than Uncut Gems.

Matt Damon has said repeatedly over the course of promoting The Odyssey that making Christopher Nolan’s latest film was the most physically demanding role Damon’s ever handled. I find that surprising considering Damon was literally Jason Bourne. The Bourne franchise has never and may never receive the attention it deserves. Damon’s physicality in this role is off the charts.

Robert Pattinson reflected on Christopher Nolan’s impact on superhero films during his GQ interview with Matt Damon and Tom Holland. 🦇 “I remember I was doing the ‘Twilight’ movies when they [Batman trilogy] were coming out. I remember like, when I was doing press for ‘Twilight’ being so full of hope like, going and seeing those movies. ‘Cause it was just when every movie was starting to be a super hero movie and there was this kind of sort of outlier, where it’s like you can kind of have these kind of operatic performances that no one is discount like at all.”

DEVELOPING: Ridley Scott’s latest film The Dog Stars, which hits theaters next Friday, is being met with tremendous praise. I’ve yet to see the film, but early reviews are hailing this as Scott’s best work of the decade. Featuring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley & Josh Brolin, this is a film I’m dying to see. Scott is nearly 90 but still making films. Don’t take a living legend for granted.

I’m excited to see some of the set pieces Nolan executes in The Odyssey, including the way in which Nolan brings the Trojan Horse to life. Nolan brought the Batmobile to life in the best way possible, which is just one example of Nolan’s excellence.

"I called my friends at IMAX and I said, 'If ever we're going to make a film entirely in IMAX, this is The Odyssey. So, can you find a way to alleviate the limiting factor?'" "The limiting factor being the cameras are extremely loud." "We've never been able to capture dramatic scenes with an IMAX camera." "What they did is they came up with a way of blimping the camera." Christopher Nolan’s next film is only 63 days away but the doubters are out in full force- you can hear them from miles away. I’d like to offer an olive branch to those questioning Nolan in this moment: there’s still time for you to reverse course & stop doubting Nolan. I’m truly surprised by how many have suggested that The Odyssey could be a full-blown failure. The “bust potential” conversations around this film are growing, albeit needlessly. Many have criticized Nolan’s casting decisions & creative decisions- without even seeing the film. This is all without mentioning that Nolan just won multiple Oscars- he just gave us an immediate classic with Oppenheimer. Doesn’t that mean he gets the benefit of the doubt? Shouldn’t people hold their reservations until they see Nolan’s vision through? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Let this be a line of demarcation. 63 days out from The Odyssey, if you’re one of those folks doubting/questioning Nolan, this might be one of your last chance to be on the right side of history when Nolan drops another classic.

Heath Ledger as Joker has to be on the short list & is probably the most obvious choice I could go with, but I can’t help but think about Ledger in the wake of The Odyssey. Christopher Nolan’s secret weapon is that he’s so damn good at casting. I know he would’ve found a slot for Heath in The Odyssey or Oppenheimer.

Robert Pattinson & Tom Holland are excellent scene partners & I hope they continue to work together. They were outstanding in their shared moments in The Odyssey, which is a continuation of their great work together in the 2020 release The Devil All the Time. Pattinson sort of brings out some of Holland’s best stuff. I love their work together.

It's so obvious." "Why is it that critic reviews are separated from audience reviews? Why are they given a DEI category?"
